[SPEC] A word about strategy

So far, the name of this game has been membership... points for solving riddles are nigligable at this point, the pic upload pipeline is closed, and there are only so many riddles the Gamem8ker can use.

But membership will also reach a stable level... so colonies might lose interest (the crappy riddles and the lack of real competition).

So I think the Gamem8ker will change his strategy so that puzzle solving is rewarded in a way that it will actually make a difference in the standings.

We should play that card and work towards building a better puzzle solving machine. We should make it clear that we are solving the riddles first and by ourselves. We should also establish clear (formal?) links with some of the other colonies... i.e. feed them the answer once we have it.

If puzzle-sloving is to be made more important then points will have to be awarded on a tier, dependent upon who gets them first. If that is the case I'm not sure sharing with other colonies would be to our benefit...

Of course they could also link the puzzle points to the number of members in the team i.e. the more members the less points. This would tie in with the gamem8kers comments that a team with 15 members could win...but tht could really mean anything.

I suppose the fairest way to do it would be a mixture between the two...

Info: I think we get 110 points for solving the riddle first..10 for every other colony that solves it.

Didn't someone say something early on about the leaderboards being irrelevant or a distraction or something? Taking a real world perspective if this is all to launch the new Xbox then it's all about how many people can be reached; either by joining up as colonists or by fly posting the Colony logo (and could law enforcement have something to do with the fact we're no longer encouraged to upload photos of our fly posting efforts?) The riddles and occasional secret images are to keep everyone hooked, though you hope they will improve somewhat, kind of brings us back to those links to human clock, alex rosen, colonize.com, the bubble pictures etc. etc. figuring out their relevance has to open up new secrets or a new part of the game?

We can do it with spoiler tags before it is solved... once someone in the team solves it, then it can be posted openly. We know other teams are lurking (just accuse someone of cheating and you'll see the wrath of the newbie unfold), but in reality collaborative puzzle solving moves faster than any lurker can assimilate. Additionally, we need our leader to begin validating user names.

Even if it impossible to keep our answers secret it doesn't change the fact that points for answering the challenge first will be pointless if everyone gets the answer at the same time...

That's just the thing... everyone DOESN'T get the answer at the same time... only one person does. So if we work here to get it, whoever has an idea tries it out first, and then posts here if it worked (or didn't). Lurkers won' get it, and as other teams see that we are gaining on challenges, they'll have less time to lurk.

So I'm proposing to make puzzle solving our competitive advantage, and let other teams know how good we are at it, so that they'll either spend more time *trying* to solve (we know they can' beat Unforums), or join us when they see the strategy is different (lots of ship jumpers out there)

Of course, this is all based on the assumption that Gamem8ker will eventually put more emphasis on problem solving.

It still doesn't make any sense to me that they took away the colony forums because its so much harder to organize discussions without it. I think the emphasis will shift more to problem solving but do you think there will be a replacement or maybe a refinement of the picture submission way of attaining points? Maybe more specific rules or only at certain locations. I just printed out a bunch of ants but have no reason to stick them anywhere. Besides, that still seems like the most intuitive way to get exposure for this whole thing and then indirectly Xbox360 (god i hate that name). What do you think?

We are in fourth now? pretty much all we can do to get points in between challenges is to submit more? oh man, time to get cracking.

How is posting on this forum going to stop lurkers from getting the answers? A lot of people from other teams know about this board, and if its just he odd person froma different board the answer will migrate pretty quick.

Because once the answer is posted, it means it's already been succesfully entered on the site... at that point it doesn't matter that other colonies get the answer... the spoils have been taken already.

Gamem8ker did say that the greatest rewards would come from submitting challenges. That's our strong suit- let's get cracking!
