Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Pong
But that wasn't it.

I got a lead.
All in the Family is a popular and acclaimed American situation comedy that was originally broadcast on the CBS television network from January 12, 1971 until 1979. In September 1979, the show was retooled and given a new name, Archie Bunker's Place. With that title, the sitcom lasted another four years, finally ending its run in 1983.
Ever since 1979 the show was retooled and given a new name, Archie Bunker's Place.
Now we just need to find what those two rods are...

Don't know of any relation to saving a family, but I found this about the 1979 movie "Phantasm"
Quote:
So suddenly, after all of this nothing, we get thirty seconds of plot. Mike figures out that the two rods sticking out of the floor are actually a gateway to another world.

I like the Three Mile Island connection, but I don't know what the answer could be.

I think this is it... though what may be the answer? The title isn't one.

Two Rods = Rods Two = Rod Stewart?
He was around in 79... maybe one of his songs / albums/ or his wife at the time? Adoptive daughter?

In 1979, there was a made-for-TV movie called Hot Rod.
