[Info] A lot of new information about ourcolony.net!

I just posted this at our forums here: http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=338153 but I figure I'll just copy paste here for everyone. Smile

-----

K, so, everyday, you can't login, you re-register, or use the workaround where you only enter the team pass then goto the team page, etc etc!!!

First, here's what's going on with cookies at ourcolony.net. These are steps you would take if you couldn't login:

Before anything, whenever you hit any page on the site you'll get an ASP.NET session id cookie (People that develop web applications will know what this is, mostly I included this just to be complete, don't worry about it).

First goto the lounge and Join Existing Colony. Here you will enter 86415989 for the "TeamXbox" team pass.

When you submit that 2 cookies are set:

ColonyId = 57
ColonyName = TeamXbox

Both these cookies expire at the end of the session (when you close your browser).

Now you're presented with a registration form where you need to enter a username, password, location, etc. So, you fill that all out.

When you submit the registration 4 more cookies are set:

ColonyLockStatus = 1
ColonyLogo = TeamXbox.jpg
IsLeader = No
UserName = [YourUserNameHere]

All these cookies expire at the end of the session as well (when you close your browser).

Then of course you're finally back at the team homepage. * A special note here though ... The colony logo will not display, and the text about passing along the team pass will not be complete, the team pass will be missing.

So now, close your browser, reopen and try to go back to the team page (Because you're hitting the site again with no cookies you get a new ASP.NET session id cookie).

Anyway, because you closed your browser, all your cookies were removed. So, you're prompted with a login form where you'll need to enter your username and password (That you just registered with).

You'll successfully login and go right to the team page and a bunch of cookies are all set at the same time this time (Note these didn't exist until you logged in because the cookies were gone after you opened and closed your browser before this).

ColonyId = 57
ColonyName = TeamXbox
ColonyLockStatus = 1
ColonyLogo = TeamXbox.jpg
IsLeader = No
UserName = [YourUserNameHere]

Again, all these cookies expire at the end of the session (when you close your browser). The "ColonyLockStatus" is interesting … I changed it to "0" but nothing changed, as far as I know.

Once again you're taken to the team homepage. This time though, the logo appears and the colony team pass displays. This is obviously due to the fact that these two cookies are present now, strange, but that's how they're rendered in the page, yup, straight from your cookies.

Now, questions ...

Q) So why does the little work around actually work?

A) Because, as seen above when you enter a team pass when Joining an Existing Colony the colonyid cookie is set, and the team page recognizes it and displays the information for that colony. In this case though, no colony logo or team pass will display on the team page because those cookies are not present.

Q) So why do I have to frigin re-register every frigin day!!!

A) This answer is a lot more involved, and brings me to the second piece of information NO ONE has mentioned, or at least not that I know of. So get this, the "leader" of a colony (The user that created the colony) has the ability to remove users from the colony, that's right, the LEADER CAN REMOVE USERS FROM THE COLONY. The leader also has the option to transfer leadership to another colony member. Both of these functions are really simple to use and can be accessed by two additional links located at the top left of the page, just to the left of the "Invite a Friend" link. The links to perform these actions are, Remove Member Transfer Leadership and here I've provided an image so you can see where the links appear at the top left:

Image link

Pretty damn interesting to say the least. So now, the question is, is someone "out of game" just randomly going through and removing users from colonies using this "remove member" tool? Or, is it the infamous gamema8ker just messing with all of us? Me, I think it may be a little of both ...

removed exploitable links - HHM

** edited because a link to a large picture is easier on page load times than actually including the large picture within the post itself. -- jamesi

It could be possible that people are being randomly removed to avoid colonies creating hundreds of bogus accounts.

If an account is being used, they can delete it and after a few days of inactivity on a large number of accounts they might dock points for non-active members.

Just a thought, but might be what has happened to the bigger scoring teams.

there is a mistake with the leader thing, and if someone knows how, they can become the leader of -any- colony. And I'm sure some idiots are abusing this "bug"

No i definitely agree with you. I was so excited when i found out about ourcolony because of how amazed i was the entire span of ilb. Now that i've been involved though it isn't as rewarding or as fun as ILB was and it does seem kind of rushed or not fully thought out. Being a constantly updated "game" though, maybe once we move beyond truth we will have more options to score points and some of the bugs can be worked out.

Hova - "Because we can" is generally not accepted as a justification for an otherise questionable action. If the concern is that the PMs know about this abuse (if it's actually happening) then why not just tell Gamem8ker directly?

On an unrelated note, TeamXbox's logo is pretty tasteless.

And used in the worng context, too. That is a picture of the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989. A courageous young man captured the imagination of the whole world, when he singlehandedly stopped the advance of a tank column by standing in its way. Even though a crackdown and bloodbath ensued, this photo is now an example of how a single individual can stop the "forces of evil". So it could be interpreted as TeamXbox being stopped by everyone else.

They didn't choose that logo. Someone, maybe from TeamXbox, hacked the picture in. There was a lot of disscusion about it their ourcolony forum when they still existed. So i wouldn't blame them for it, there's nothing 99% of the group can do about it.

Yea, no one can do anything about that logo. Someone, I have no clue who, changed their leader cookie to change the image. Now of course, the option to change the image is gone.
