[SPEC] Tracking Ian

I think I have an idea of how Ian may be getting tracked by the goons.

First off, the idea that the goons bugged the car themselves is tricky. They would have had to have an idea that the car would have been stolen from them in the first place. Assuming that they did know, wouldn't they place a device that would allow them to track the Audi accurately instead of just letting them be in the general vicinity? Instead of going to see Ian at the hotel, why not secure the Audi from where he hid it first, then go take care of the loose ends? Or why not even grab it when he was still in NJ?

My reasoning is: because they didnt' have the car bugged in the first place.

So, how is Ian being tracked? I think Ian himself provided the means. When he was first trying to track the car, he had an IRC chat with CG. In the conversation, Ian mentions he needs CG to fix the tracking program (which runs off a cellphone signal) for him because it's no longer working. CG does and sends the program back to him. So now CG has the capability of tracking someone via a cellphone signal. And CG does have at least one phone number for Ian (although granted that could be his landline). Ian being tracked by his cellphone would allow for the fact that he was found before the car was (assuming he had the phone on him & not in the car).

As to why CG would use the tracking program on Ian, that goes back to the theory that CG is working with Virgil in some shape or form (and that Virgil is mastermind behind Gunter's plan). We have CG pegged with a California IP. Whether or not he was telling the truth is another matter. But if he was - it opens up a lot of possibilities, one of which could now make CG a traitor to Ian.

As for what this means for Ian: If he ditched the phone he's using and got a throwaway (and only share the # with Nisha), he could quite possibly get the goons off his tail.

What about triangulation of a cell phone?

Considering Gunter's call on stolena3, I find it much more likely they are tracking the car based on something provided by Gunter himself.

To prevent the decryption program from being copied, there'd have to be some sort of routine resident in memory (and stealth so it'd be hard for Ian to find). That same loop can provide a GPS ping at intervals. (It can't be constant, because it'd a.) drain power too much and b.) if it was constant, the goons would've got Ian already.)

I have an idea how this would work and might attempt a mock-up code at some point.

if the phone / pda / car has gprs, then it can be easily located. there are services in the uk that can track any mobile phone number (the phone has to sign up for it...officially) like http://www.childlocate.co.uk
