Email Phyllis Almost contacted Sarah, Foiled by Degs

Dearest Sunny,
On Thursday night, we tried to contact Sarah with the stone as a link, sitting on the site of the graffiti in Douglas' office. As I reported, Iris felt only interference and got no impressions. Last night, we choose to hold our s้ance in the entertainment room that was, I believe, Sarah's studio. The four of us sat in a circle on the floor; our legs crossed like Indians, close enough for our knees to be touching. Iris laid the manuscript page in her lap with the stone upon it and we all put our minds in a meditative state. After a moment, I felt the most curious tingling on my skin and Chris whispered, "My skin is tingling." James and Iris nodded their heads in agreement. A few minutes more and Iris sighed with frustration, "I'm getting something but it's vague; I can't make it out." "Do you think it's the stone?" I suggested, "Maybe we should try the manuscript page alone." Everyone agreed and I took the stone back to its hiding place.

When we started again, the tingling came back at once and became much more intense. A chill permeated the room and the candles we had lit around the perimeter began to waver. The boundaries of the room – the walls, floor and ceiling – seemed to shimmer and become insubstantial. Iris showed the signs of going into one of her deep trances so I restrained myself from crying out as Sarah's artwork began to seep back into existence again. James, Chris and I were all swiveling our heads, looking with wonder as patches of color and sections of scrawled words seemed to be rising to the surface. It was like watching a Polaroid develop.

Iris called out in a deep voice, "Sarah, Sarah, are you there?" There was a sudden movement in the air, almost a wind that rushed to the center of our circle as though it was a vacuum sucking the room into it. It looked like my whole visual perception of the room was warping – light, sound, color, all seemed to be shifting toward a focal point in the middle of our circle of linked minds. A shape started to form and I heard a ripping sound – it's hard to describe. Imagine the sound of tearing a length of fabric but slowed down and amplified a hundred-fold. Spontaneously, I grabbed James' hand on my left and Chris' hand on my right and held on tightly. I saw each of them take hold of one of Iris' hands while her eyes dazzled in deep trance. Our eyes were wide with wonder and awe for we could sense an otherworldly presence.

Iris stated, flatly, "Sarah," and everything stopped – the movement of the air, the light shifting, the tearing noise – all ceased. In a frozen, eerie silence and stillness, I held my breath, watching Iris' face, waiting, expectant.

Then, I nearly jumped out of my skin when a loud pounding commenced at the front door! Alarmed voices shouted, "Mrs. Willingham! Mrs. Willingham!" In an instant, in the blink of an eye, the atmosphere in the room evaporated back to normalcy. "Damn!" Iris sagged, "We were so close!"

I jumped up and rushed to the front door to find our security people in a
dither of confusion and alarm. They had seen figures moving in shadows,
scurrying from tree to bush, edging closer to the house. When they attempted to intercept these figures they disappeared. As part of their preliminaries, they installed floodlights around the perimeter of the house and when they threw them on, there was no one and nothing in the glare of the lights. So my brawny lads were spooked and thought they should alert me. I suppose this is my fault. I did tell them about Marzano; they naturally expected normal intruders. Standing at the front door last night, I considered telling them about the DEG's but when I looked at their hardened, no-nonsense faces I couldn't find the words. So, I told them to leave the floodlights on all night, every night, and that seemed to reassure them.

After I shut the door, James said, "Well, that blew the mood," shaking his head and throwing up his hands. Indeed, there seemed no point in trying for contact again last night. We'll give it another go this evening and I'll have to figure out what to tell the security people so they don't intrude again.

Sunny, this was the most extraordinary experience I've ever had in my life! My very perception of reality was altered! I feel like Sarah was almost there, almost. Would she have spoken through Iris or would we have heard her directly? I get chills of excitement just thinking about it. We will definitely give it another go this evening.

Love,
Phyllis
