[UPDATE] Perplex city sentinel (25/04/2005)

New article and new future section

Quote:
By Madame Bianca, for the week of April 25

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
You are a rare and special flower. No, really. I don't care what all those other people say.

The Wave (May 11 - June 10)
My, my. Hasn't my little up-and-downer gone and made himself a big ol' fanboy? A little birdie tells me that you've quite the crush on a certain big name gamer. Remember, they taze stalkers.

The Archer (June 11 - July 10)
Sure have your work cut out for you. Use the week to recharge. It's the calm before the storm.

The Half-filled Jug (July 11 - August 10)
Well, tip you over and pour you out: someone's hiding a lush secret. It's not as covert as you think. I spy with my little eye a spider in the know.

The Dragon (August 11 - September 10)
Dude, have you tried the dragon roll at Asiachique? It's a little explosion of heaven in one's mouth. It's really just the thing to soothe the savage beast.

The Three Balls (September 11 - October 10)
Grey days got you down? I hear Brain Benders has a special happy hour on when it's raining. Get in out of the wet and have a little fun. Tell 'em Madame B. sent you, and you'll get the works.

The Dice (October 11 - November 10)
Your lucky charm isn't working so well these days. Best to grow out of those childish superstitions.

The Maze (November 11 - December 10)
It happens that I found myself at the Mimasan Maze last night, and naturally I thought of you, dear reader. Meditation early this week will do you much good, leading to unbound clarity in the days ahead.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Phee phi pho phum. Phew that you've returned to mum.

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Stop being so frenetic; it's making me nervous. Roll on back to the bar. No eel and cucumber for you, though; it wouldn't sit right when you're so unsettled.

The Baby (February 11 - March 10)
I see you're getting a little careless. Is it on purpose? Make sure you know what happens when you get caught, babe.

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
As the pop song goes, you'll never get the spoils if it's not in the cards. Stick a card up your sleeve, snookums, and let the spoils come to you. But just this once. Our secret. Yours, mine, and the 5 million strong Sentinel readership.

No way, Madame Bianca has sold out! I wonder how much money she is getting from Asiachique and Brain Benders for those shameless plugs ?!?

Anyway, the Archer entry is quite interesting, but I don't make much sense of the rest of it. Anyone else?

We would, therefore, like to debut a new column, "The View from Earth." This is a place for our Earth-dwelling readership to make their voices heard on our pages. The topics to be covered may range far afield, from the status of the hunt for the Receda Cube, to the problems our worlds have in common, perhaps even including some pointed social commentary. We deeply believe that both the people of Perplex City and of Earth will benefit.

so it would appear we dont need a key with as much urgency any more

New letters as well, only the final one here because it made me chuckle.

The Sentinel Letters wrote:

EARTH NOT-SO-CHIC

I attended the Earthworks opening fête a week and a half ago. My wife and I have long been Earthophiles, so naturally we were delighted to receive our invitations in the mail. The store was handsomely arranged, and a lovely spread was provided.

We were, however, very taken aback by the quality of the goods available for purchase. Many of the items were shoddily constructed. The globes were not perfect spheres and failed to demark my pet country, Canada, altogether. I certainly did not appreciate the "vision" behind "Earthen Pop Hits as Envisioned and Interpreted by Aurora Belle;" the album played during our visit to the store and was truly painful. The "au courant Earth styles" included gentlemen's suspenders! Any Earth lover worth his salt can tell you that suspenders have not been worn on Earth with anything other than complete irony and flagrant fashion abuse in decades.

Proprietor Mitchell Alba is more concerned with his bottom line than with providing a truthful slice of Earth life -- a service, mind you -- for Perplexians. I shall continue to patronize Hannigan's, which has been replicating Earth goods for nearly twenty years. Lauren Hannigan takes great care in selecting her products and truly caters to a discerning clientele. Alba's business is merely a flash in the pan trying to cash in on the latest craze.

The Apple-Thief (December 11 - January 10)
Phee phi pho phum. Phew that you've returned to mum.

Irrelevant?

Phi with an upper case "P" is 1.6180339887..., while phi with a lower case "p" is 0.6180339887, the reciprocal of Phi and also Phi minus 1.
I'm just getting this from the net btw, I don't know much about Phi, except that it is another mathematical constant...
*examines website*
It occurs when you divide a line into two sections, B (larger section) and C (smaller section), and call the whole line A, so that the proportions between B and C are the same as those between A and B. This happens where you place the dividing point so that A is Phi*B amd B is Phi*C.

There you go. Now, is it relevant at all?[/i]

I wonder if perhaps there are clues at these places? Can anyone verify whether these two establishments exist, and if so where? A simple google doesn't find much...

As for the "earth section" article, it seems like they are finally making it (somewhat) apparent how we are supposed to use the web to keep communicating with them. Plus with all the emails they are publishing, looks like it doesn't hurt to keep firing those away either. Very Happy

It just dawned on me that only the futures and letters had been posted here, so here's the "Earth section" article:

Quote:
Earth Column to Debut in Sentinel
Opinion/Editorial

We at the Sentinel have been surprised and impressed in recent weeks with the spirited, engaging flood of email that has come to us from Earth via the Academy. Earth readers of our External Edition, we have found, are an educated, carefully-considered group. They have been large in spirit in pledging their aid to the return of the Receda Cube, and thoughtful in addressing the problems confronting us here at home. This became particularly evident in the aftermath of the Northside Preserve protest several days ago.
Though we in Perplex City have long studied the people of Earth, it appears that we, too, now bear scrutiny. Seeing ourselves through the eyes of another culture and its people has proven to be a fascinating experience for the staff of the Sentinel, and it is one we would like to share with our entire readership.

Submission Guidelines
We will select one column a week to run on our front page. Submissions should be submitted to newsSPLATperplexcitysentinel.com, with "View from Earth" in the subject line. We humbly suggest that columns be comparable in length to our regular news articles. Please submit only completed pieces, as we are are unable to consider individual queries.
We regret that we have no way to compensate columnists from Earth aside from some small personal glory, but hope to be able to offer some other form of reward in the future.

I'm still wondering how we're supposed to get the cube back to them, even if we DO choose to...

Well...it's usually spelt Fee Fi Fo Fum, so the Ph's seem to be deliberate...but, could be just to alliterate with phew.

How about writing a column on ARGs? They like puzzles. I I migt disappear in a puff of logic (or confusion) if someone did though!

If in OOG terms you find the cube and its a physical object, odds are that would be the reward that they go on about.

Wow, I never knew that phi-1 = 1/phi. Had to check that on a calculator just to be sure - what a neat trick. For those of you who haven't read the summary on phi in The Da Vinci Code, it crops up all over the place. It's sometimes called the golden number/ratio/section, and the Fibonacci series converges on it. Lookee here for more information that sets off nice and mathematical but eventually borders on quasi-religious loopiness (perhaps in the same way that cults like The Cubists have sprung up in ppc).

Just had a thought...isn't Phi pronounced fee? In which case it ruins the giant's catchphrase...sounds like he's calling to his poodle "Fee-fee? Fo Fum?"
