i can think of a few bars like that. for instance, here in phoenix, if you say cooperstown, everyone knows where you are talking about .

as for the cups. this was actually mentioned in da vinci code, as someone said. the cups is the same as the grail, which was a symbol for women. its pretty much a v. sometimes a closed triangle. the symbol for men is the blade, which is pointed up, but otherwise the same as the grail. blade=sword, grail= cup. sword=club, cup=heart. five of cups, five vs, v is five in roman numerals, so we have vvvvv, which is twenty five, i guess. dunno, just thinking aloud here.

they may be named after the old names for playing cards, not tarot cards

Since the playing card (which came from tarot anyway) no longer have meaning 5 of cups would just be an abitrary card, ussualy when naming stuff after playing cards you pick something that stands out like the Queen of Hearts (that would be a good Alice in Wonderland ref by the way) not a random card, however since all the tarot cards have meaning and the 5 of cups deals with depression and Sterotypicaly "only depressed people drink at bars to get away from there problems" the tarot card definition fits in a Sterotypical fashion.

maybe the owner won a big game of poker with the 5 of cups on the river; then he spent his winnings on buying the bar!

anyway... I agree with cassandra that

i think this is one of those examples that shows that there society as a whole may not be a science oriented as the acadamy wants us to belive.
Or that up untill the discovery of the cube thier world was very supesticious as ours was around that same time and that in some ways because of the discovery of the cube they never grow out of that superstion as we have.

Is it just me or are there similarities between the futures section and some of the latest headlines..e.g.

The Spider (April 11 - May 10)
You are a rare and special flower. No, really. I don't care what all those other people say.
Petel Returns from Brink to Victory

The Eagle (March 11 - April 10)
As the pop song goes, you'll never get the spoils if it's not in the cards. Stick a card up your sleeve, snookums, and let the spoils come to you. But just this once. Our secret. Yours, mine, and the 5 million strong Sentinel readership.
Five of Cups Owner Found Dead

It seems like maybe the futures are instructions to/from someone. That could also be why of all things Sente lets the Futures through to the external Sentinel.

Good catch. Those two certainly look related. Maybe we should look back through some past futures and see if there are other correlations?

honestly I was thinking about something like that (hence my NSD comment) - I know it's common to omit irrelevant or vague bits from quotations to assist in clarity, brevity, and journalistic motive Wink, but I wondered about the ellipsis in: "...it is clear that the intruder or intruders ransacked the establishment looking for ... cash or possibly drugs."

Or looking for something more classified?

Is this the first article where it was a really recent event? They're stating it happened "yesterday morning", which is why I think we'd be able to get some answers by contacting people.

EDIT:

Oh! This just jumped right out at me! Look at the futures post:

The Hand (January 11 - February 10)
Stop being so frenetic; it's making me nervous. Roll on back to the bar. No eel and cucumber for you, though; it wouldn't sit right when you're so unsettled.

"Roll on back to the bar"? "No eel and cucumber for you, though" ? Perhaps the Five of Cups is a sushi bar?

Also, I did a little research, and a "Soba Tray", used for Japanese Soba Noodles, normally includes five cups....

Everything certainly points to the fact that the Perplexians reeeally like the raw fish! Maybe they don't have ovens.

Oh my god, the cube is a microwave.

You know, I always wondered what he'd been up to since Rainbow ended. So the cube thief may turn out to be a slightly camp, naked, human sized bear who refuses to come out of the sea when his swimming trunks have come off.

On a more serious note, the mention of the alarm system not being set, or being disabled... ooo it's an M.O.

Oh, and they've found that hiker. It's amazing what's behind those cushions...

Hi

Wasn't there someone else mysteriously killed recently, run over by a car. I was looking for the update thread but couldn't find it.

Also could the same technology have been used to disable the alarm that also disabled the alarms at the academy, the night the cube was taken?

If this has been said before I will consider myself done to a turn with a touch of butter, creme fresh and sprinkled chives, 10 - 15 mins at gas 7.

Blue Men exist. Laughing

Anyways... something I noticed immediately... Holyoke is a college. Probably nothing important, but caught my eye.

No one said that, right? I was just skimming the other pages. Sorry. Heh.[/url]

heh, if I hadn't gone to UVA, I was going to attend Mount Holyoke, actually.

More interestingly, to me, is the Holyoke basalt formation that exists in that area. It contains pyroxene and plagioclase, two minerals found on Mars/the moon/outer space. *ponders again what the cube is made of*
