Heh! If only we knew how!
I think we need a co-ordinated plan though - I need to tell Mary if we want her to do anything fairly soon.

Ok... we do need a coordinated plan.
How 'bout this:
First, at a specified time, Mary and anyone she can get in touch with (her miner friends) all individually walk out of their quarters and start making noise. Complain about something. Don't resist, but confront the guards so that the guards have to take them back to where they should be.
Second, Chin hijacks the intercom and starts playing pulsar recordings at full volume. That should keep the guards from communicating effectively with each other.
Third, if possible, Ohmega sets off the fire suppression system in random parts of the station. Just to add to the chaos.
What do you think?
Edit: I left out the monkeys 'cause as far as I know, no one we've talked to knows where they are. I think I'm going to feel out Chester though, just in case. I know someone said he's probably in on everything, since Tim put him in charge, but I'm not so sure. Would he have been so disgruntled if he knew the plan?

Good - I was going to get in touch with Chester myself, since we seem to be running out of options - so I'm glad someone is going to.
I think since Mary suggested her friends could help with security and locks, I still think we can cause some chaos there.
I wonder about the order in the plan - might it be better to use Dr Parks distraction so that Mary can get out of her room?
Also - what about the Earth prisoners? They were white collar criminals - so they shouldn't be inherently dangerous to release - but would certainly add a bit more to the problems. Any thoughts?
And another thing - Hanna says the gun will fire Friday evening (so THIS evening) - but that doesn't seem to tally with the countdown. Which do we think is correct?

I would go with Hanna, it might have been a PMs oversight..

Actually I sort of meant for all three things to happen at the same time, though I can see that wasn't clear.
It could all be triggered by Chin's broadcast.
No reply from Chester so far...

Good idea - I'll tell Mary that it will be triggered by the broadcast, but to try and get herself ready a bit before that with her miner friends.
She can release either the monkeys or the prisoners - whatever she can manage.
I did email Hanna to ask her about the timing - but no reply yet.

Just had an email from Hanna
Quote:
Ohmega thinks that the gun time is right, so I was wrong. It is currently 22:40
here (by GMT on earth) and the gun will execute its command in a little over
two days and two hours. So we have a little bit of time left.
That combination of distractions should work. I mean, if that doesn't kick
up at least a little confusion I don't know what would! Regardless,
we're going to try to set off distractions and get me to the console a
half hour before it activates the command. I will be communicating at
irc.chat-solutions.org in the room #saveearth. This gives us a half hour to
talk it over. Umm, if you all would before then, could you give me a few
reasons why you want me to put in the command you decide? I mean, setting the
self destruct sequence makes me a bit nervous. I don't really want to
blow myself up to save Earth.
We might be able to come up with a good decision before the distractions go off,
too.
Also, I'm going to try and take a little recorder with me. Whatever
happens, the people of Earth deserve to know what our (possibly) last actions
on this station are. I don't know if it will be text or voice, but
I'll make sure it transmits after I enter that final command.
So it's not tonight - and we can chat on irc!!!
Woo Hoo!
To clarify - the distractions I mentioned were releasing the monkeys and/or earth prisoners, and broadcasting something loud over the intercom.

OK look im sure there has to be a way of not killing them, why cant we just aim at the gate again? On elife versus hundreds is not a bad trade off. Its not great but blowing up the station is unthinkable.....

Email from Mary - she's going to release the prisoners
Quote:
I... okay, I think I can get some of my friends to short out the halo collars.
Together with the prisoners, we should be able to make a ruckus.
I'll make some earplugs and pass those out to the miners I trust.
From what I've overheard, I think we have at least a day or two before... before
things go crazy. I hope we do, because I don't know if I can get everything
organized so quickly. I... I'll do my best, but... people have never really
wanted to follow me.
At least I'll be doing the right thing this time.
This is going to rock!
As to why we can't just aim at the asteroid - we don't know enough about the star people to decide yet. They sound powerful, and if we shoot at them maybe we will have enemies that we would really rather not have.
And maybe this is what the Merzkeen really want - perhaps it is them that are reallyour enemies? Although if this is the case, we would have to guess that the recording from Jacob this week was faked
We just don't know yet.

i asked our Hanna about Garith and what he might be able to do:
Quote:
I guess I can't see what harm it would do and he certainly seems eager to go. I've patched him up well enough that he should have no trouble making it back to his ship once the distractions start.
This sounds promising, once the prisoners/monkeys are released - Garith could tell us what the Star People are about...and we may still have control of the gun by then?

The fact that we have a chat room set up for the last half an hour suggests to me that some twist is going to hapen at the last minute. My guess is the portal will start opening big horrible things with lots of tentacles will start emerging, beth will start speaking in tongues (No change there!) and we will have to destroy the portal.

dr park Just got a new communique from Dr. Park:
I suppose that I could find a way to release those monkeys. You can’t get
a PHD without being at least a little bit crafty, you know.
As far as our radio telescope here, it isn’t much different from most
other radio telescopes on earth. Our resolution is better as we are not
listening through an atmosphere. Resonant frequencies are important, as it is
thought that extra terrestrial intelligences will try to communicate on
1420.405.75mhzv which is the resonating frequency of hydrogen.
It appears that they will not do that, however. They will instead throw a giant
asteroid at you. How elegant is that? These aliens aren’t as efficient as
I thought aliens would be.
In response to your question about pulsars and the telescope, I am unsure what
the point of that would be. I have a recording of the pulsar here, and I
suppose we could pump it through the intercom. I’m not sure if it would
be any more damaging than any other loud sound. I think I could do as you ask,
though.
