[OT] Cars and Gadgets...

From the CA op thread...

And a review of the car

And a link to the Treo 650 user manual

Here's the deal... I can *drive* a manual (transmission) very well, but I'll be buggered if I can actually START a manual.

Tell me more about the DSG. Does that mean I don't have to worry about stalling the car out when I start it up and then switch to manual while I'm driving?

If I understand the DSG, and I don't actually claim to, it means that you can switch between automatic and manual transmission while driving, and the "manual" version of the transmission has no clutch, hence no extra pedal and no stalling when attempting to start it Wink It's "shifting for dummies" Very Happy

Heh, well, DSG has a dual clutch system, so it's an actual manual transmission, unlike an automatic which has a torque converter instead of the clutch. The dual clutch system lets the system have quick and smooth shifts, unlike a conventional manual -- it predicts what gear you need next, and queues that gear using the clutch that's not in use. However, being a computer controlled clutch, there is no physical clutch pedal to use. If it's anything like the SMG system, which it should be, you just need to pop the car into neutral, put your foot on the brake, and crank the key and then the car will start up. There might be a split second delay as the electronics verify it's "safe" to start, but that should do it. Shifting can be done using paddles on the steering wheel, traditionally having the left paddle shifting down and the right paddle shifting up. Shifting can also be done with the shifter in the usual location -- pushing forward should shift down, pushing back should shift up... while going left or right will either put the car into neutral or into an autoshift mode depending on the car. Stalling is possible, but you have to work hard to do it, so don't worry about that. Very Happy

All I can say is, if there's a car chase involved somewhere, I nominate SMG3er to be the wheelman. Wink
