[UPDATE] New Sentinel Article (2nd May)

Quote:
Receda Cube Recovery Plan Unveiled
By IONA RODIE
Academy Master Sente Kiteway's plans for retrieving the Receda Cube were finally unveiled today. Speaking at a press conference, spokesperson Valerian Reynolds confirmed that Kiteway is releasing a card-based puzzle game on Earth, not unlike some of our own PCAG games, with a point system for prestige and ranking. Some of these cards have now been released to 333 individuals on Earth as a limited-edition preview.

"The objective of this game is threefold," said Reynolds. "First, we need to attract attention to our situation, to better our odds of locating the Cube. Second, we have to inform the people of Earth about ourselves and our culture. Third, we hope that this game will encourage the people of Earth to take a playful approach to the problem, leading to more creative thinking."

Letters from the people of Earth to the Sentinel have betrayed confusion; some Cube-seekers appear now to believe that the Cube is merely a "reward" to be awarded to the searcher who accrues the most points. "Even Sente's most vocal opponents don't seriously believe he knows where it is now, and is somehow concealing it," agreed City Council Leader Camryn Scott. "It's simply unthinkable."

It remains to be seen, however, whether Sente's players will be able to locate the Cube based on the information released in these cards and in the increasing number of Perplex City web sites available on Earth. "Why does Sente believe the people on Earth can solve a mystery that has eluded our own police? However much they find out about us from this game, why should we think they'll be able to use that information to find the Cube?" asked City Councilor Kyra Anghanda.

Reynolds was bullish in the face of criticism regarding shroud of secrecy that the Academy has thrown over the project. "The fact remains that the thief or thieves are still at large in our city," she said. "We do not know to what lengths they may go to subvert our aims; we had to keep our plan secret here in the city until we were ready to reveal it to the people of Earth, and we make no apology for having done so. ... We have had to overcome significant technological barriers, and we have many yet to come," she added.

Reynolds admitted that, even if the Cube should be located, the means to transport it back to Perplex City is not available. "We will rest easier simply knowing it is in a safe place on Earth," she said.

The Receda Cube was stolen from the Academy Museum over a year ago, and subsequently traced to Earth. Master Kiteway has been under significant political and public pressure both to retrieve the Cube, and to release details surrounding his plan to do so.

Plus lots of angry letters from the ad hoc rabble on Earth Very Happy

Isn't it a bit weird that the pic of the Leitmark is an actual photgraph rather than a drawing? Maybe it's just people that are drawn, oh and buildings too.

Any thoughts???

I like the look of this:

so we don't need to worry bout returning it, and as even the perplexians don't know what it does they won't worry bout us doing anything dangerous with it...

I think this article might be published in order to inform any "stragglers" who hasn't understood the concept of the game and the cards - as anyone finding out about PPC right now would have a lot of reading to do...

Or perhaps to clarify that the Cube is not just a reward, but serves a higher point as well - apart from being relevant to the story, I mean.

Or on the other hand, perhaps not.

It still doesn't seem logical that they say the Cube can't get back...What could cause it to COME here, without being able to bring it back? What would be the point of some one from Perplex City sending it to Earth if they couldn't get it back? It is just...odd.

Well, it's possible that INFORMATION (websites, etc.) can get from PC to Earth when they are sent directly, and so can OBJECTs (physical matter like the cube).

But, the opposite direction might not work. Only recently have we been able to SEND information the other direction (though we've been observed for a while). And there's NO evidence of anything physical going from Earth to PC.

[spec]Maybe Earth is a dumping grounds for PC. The Perplexians don't seem particularly surprised to hear that the cube got sent to Earth, so maybe transit in that direction isn't unusual. Maybe they do it all the time. This would also explain the lack of interest (until recently) in all things Earth-y, if it's seen by most Perplexians as just some trans-dimensional garbage dump.[/spec]

well we know our emails get back to PC somehow, so _something_ from earth can get to PC... as far as physical objects go it could be a one way gate or the cube could have been a key to transport matter and they don't want to tell us that yet since it would mean giving us access to more advanced tech. As far as them not being suprised that the cube is here they have been hearing that song and dance from the academy for atleast a year now so they're over any shock there was.

It could be the magnetic field generated by people who collect fridge magnets has ripped the cube through time and/or space and unless we destroy all fridge magnets, or the Perplexians develop a love of tacky white goods ornamention, then we're stuck with it.

oh oh maybe the fridge magnets are polarizing space time to create a one way gate in the same way that diodes are basicly a oneway electircal gate and out email can get back to the sentinel because like diode it can allow a small amount of return current(data) but not a large amount ...

^ complex scifi-ish eplination above \/ simple analagy below

like a one way mirror

... but anyway we can make up all kinds of zany excusses as to why the cube got here and can't get back.
