some people might hate me for this... but if that's really what it's going to look like then I'm disappointed. My halo edition xbox looks tighter than that. I think the current controller is fine (the s-controller) and that controller just looks terrible. I've got a huge hand so it wont be any problem to stretch my fingers to the start and back buttons and the dpad... but I really don't think that looks like an improvement over what the current xbox looks like. I hope they at least have it in black. I know nothing about camera phones... but that looks kinda high-res for a camera phone.
We shall see... but as long as it performs as awesomely as they say it will then I guess it doesn't matter how the hardware looks.

the new pictures also come from engadget:

The leaked Xbox 360 pics keep on coming this afternoon. The latest is a close up shot of the new console's controller that gives us a good look at that little silvery thing in the middle, which besides sporting the Xbox 360's logo, is also supposed to be some new kind of button or something or other (if we knew exactly what it was we'd tell you).

Microsoft must have been dreaming if they thought they could hold a launch party for the Xbox 360 last night and somehow stop us from getting our hands on photos of every last piece of hardware that was there. We already scored a live shot of the console, along with its controller, now courtesy of another attendee we now know what the Xbox 360's DVD player/Media Center remote control is going to look like.
it is very important to note that the remote has a windows media center button on it, so recorded TV anyone (which is odd since theres no default HDD)

I believe that since its a wireless controller, it (edit here, it meaning "THE NUMBERS 1-4) is either a visual display of what player you are (which you can switch in between) or of what chanel or frequency range you are using. also the controller looks to have a headphone jack.

yeah i already posted about the headphone jack.
Even if its a button why would u need 1,2,3,4 imprinted into the controller ?
Maybe the X logo is a track ball ?

well i answered as to why there are numbers on the controller. you would have to know what player you are some how. read my post again. also the link i gave previously has another pic that has a trackball. maybe the "X" spot is a customizable part of the controller itself? i think the "X" button, syncs up with the system and switches between what player you are. also maybe an on and off button to conserve power. like maybe hold down to turn off. there are supposedly usb ports at what would be thr right side of the console or bottom (if its standing up) maybe the controllers can charge their battery from there? elimination the need for costly replacement batteries.
