Those specs basically confirm backwards compatibility to, but im more intrigued with the speak of streaming from Windows.

To save making a new post

Just a quick question, technically the xbox 360 is set to be as powerful and contain hardware, that would cost you what at least $1000 to find in a pc, more $1500 to $2000 in my currency AUD.

Basically as good tech specs (power) as mid to high end pcs... Yet set to cost $250 - $300.

So going on that hypothetical, could we technically say we might expect xbox360 plummit pc prices ?

Even if it doesnt have the whole xp "experience" I still have to wonder... plus the thing is likely to be highly hackable to, not that i promote or endorse such behaviour.

First off, one thing strikes me as really odd about this: anyone ever heard of 3-way (physical) or 6-way (logical) SMP? I thought SMP only worked well for powers of two.

In what way do they do that? In terms of processing and architecture emulation, yeah, it looks completely doable (especially if the video hardware can be put into little endian mode for emulating xbox games - that's probably the single biggest possible hardware issue). However, there's one significant piece of hardware reportedly missing that completely prevents backwards compatibility: the black and white buttons on the controllers.

More than that. Right now you can't get the kind of processing power that this thing has in any desktop (and don't start calling a Quad-Xenon or Quad-Operon a desktop system). In terms of architecture and proccessor, a dual 2.5GHz G5 is probably the closest thing you can buy, with a 20% slower clock and 33% fewer cores, and it starts at $2000.

I thought it was $400-$500...

Not in the slightest. Did the Xbox do anything to PC prices? Wonder why not?

Look at what goes into a console production line: 20,000,000 of the exact same specially designed part. The RAM? Specially designed. The optical drive? Specially designed. The VPU and CPU? Ooooh yeah you betcha they're specially designed. Even stuff like audio outputs, NICs, and USB tracievers that you would think are so fixed-function that they couldn't re-design them for a console are merged into a single chip to reduce part count. About the only things in an Xbox (and an Xbox360) that are some parts of the optical drive, the hard drive, fan motors, the RJ-45 jack, and the discrete components (resistors, capacitors, etc) soldered onto the various PCBs. The only reason those aren't custom is that they're already commodity goods and are available effectively at maximally efficient cost. Consoles don't share any non-commodoty goods with PCs, so they don't affect their prices.

well the original xbox controller had only two shoulder buttons. supposedly with the new controller, the black and white buttons are gone but are basicly turned into 2 new shoulder buttons. something similar to the playstation controller, 4 shoulder buttons!

In regards to the price I was going to by a report on IGN

"April 13, 2005 - Industry analysis firm Goldman Sachs expects Microsoft to ship about three million Xbox 360 units by October or November, at a price of $249 to $299, according to a recent article in Forbes.

Goldman Sachs is predicting Microsoft will target a lower-end consumer market with the next Xbox system, thus the prediction of a friendlier price-point (some analysts have previously guessed closer to $500 for the system).

And i read this from the specs

- Seamless transition to Xbox Live account from Xbox to Xbox 360

And took it as clear indication of backwards compatability, though now reading it, it could just mean transfering your existing account.

But yeah i didnt think there was much on the market that met what microsoft sounds like there going to have on offer.

yeah i would take that as saying your old live account will transfer if you take the gold account, but with the silver you would have to just get a new name and whatnot
