Holyoke Housed Stolen Academy Equipment
By PIETRO SALK
Police officials have found high-tech equipment apparently stolen from the Academy on the premises of the Five of Cups bar in the Old Town. The items were discovered during the investigation of the recent murder of the bar's owner, Bernardo Holyoke.
Police Detective Helen Frye said that the goods were found in Holyoke's flat, located upstairs from the bar. "They were concealed behind a false back in a closet and screened from scanning equipment by an EM baffler," she said. "Someone was very serious about keeping these items secret." She said that interviews with the bar's former employees and frequent patrons has already begun.

Frye indicated that the equipment is primarily very expensive high-tech gear, some still with their Academy seal and identification numbers. Among the items are an array of jury-rigged equipment which she said could be used to jam keys, security systems, or driverless vehicles. "Going by the evidence, I'd say our Mr. Holyoke was up to a lot of no good," Frye said. "This does open up another whole avenue of investigation for us in the murder, though, so we hope to make more progress on the case soon."
Academy Security Henrik Tanner confirmed that the Academy were aware that the items had been stolen. "We have already been conducting an internal investigation into these breaches of security, and feel we have made significant progress in strengthening our protection against this kind of crime. We will be working closely with the city police department to get to the heart of this," he said in a written statement.
Police are searching for Holyoke's estranged wife, Jessica, whom they wish to question. Anyone who knows her whereabouts is encouraged to contact the police.
Holyoke was found dead in his Old Town bar in late April. No suspects have been arrested.

exactly what i thought...in fact, isn't she our first true suspect?
well anyway, the Holyokes would certainly seem to be tied up in the theft somehow, and they would seem to have either access to the academy or contact with an insider who could steal this equipment for them.
the plot thickens...

Does this mean Holyoke had something to do with the killing of the pedestrian?

But why?

Ah ha! This guy was murdered and framed says I! It's too easy! Oh sure Holyoke knew something, or he wouldn't be dead and have Academy stuff in his wall, but these are unusual circumstances in and of themselves - and it wasn't suicide - right? Makes sense for a bar owner to have ties in the underworld because crooks go to bars - everyone knows that. I think it's one of Violet's friends. BUt it could also have been the milkmaid (#3).

Why murder AND frame him? Seems a bit of overkill (pun!) if you ask me - don't you normally frame someone FOR a murder.
Also, why frame someone with really expensive, important stuff?
[SPEC] I reckon he was killed for maybe threatening to grass over his involvement in the cube robbery.[/SPEC]
Edit: Fixed tag!

Unless Jessica is in serious trouble and she's the one being framed...in which case we can expect a contact of some description from her at some point.
Of course it could be entirely unrelated to the cube going missing. If the stolen gear was used during the previous raid it's been hidden for a long time and all sorts could have happened in between.

I think it was the 7 April that we had this article in the Sentinel.

Pedestrian Killed by Vehicle

This could have been done by Holyoke. At the time the man who was killed had not been identified - and we haven't heard anything in the Sentinel about this since which seems unusual.
Unconnected but I thought I'd mention it: The archive articles in the Sentinel don't have dates attached to them. This makes them a pretty awful archive. Reading the Pedestrian Killed by Vehicle article for instance, the event happened 'last night' and there are no dates given anywhere. You'd think newspaper editors in PC would be clever enough to realise that was pretty useless.

I guess this means that they've found out how the cube was stolen. All that hi-tech equipment could easily have got them past the security systems protecting hte cube.
Now to find Jessica, I'm sure she knows something that can help us.

But given that the stuff was also stolen from the University, wouldn't stealing the gear to steal the Cube be working against yourself?
What I mean is, if you were to steal high-tech, security-busting equipment from somewhere, the first thing the place would do would be to beef up security in reaction, and since it's their stuff you took, they'd know exactly what precautions to take against you.
When I first read the article, I assumed they took the stuff at the same time as they took the Cube, to make it easier for them to smuggle it out out Perplex City.

He's dead, so if you wanted to get away with stealing the stuff, frame him for it! If he's thought to be guilty, you get away with it, no more investigation. Maybe whoever really nicked it doesn't need the high tech stuff anymore, and shifting it would be hard because it's all stamped and stuff, so it's obviously from the Academy and would set alarm bells going right left and centre.

Someone knows about you stealing the cube. So what do you do? You kill him. You could frame him for stealing the cube too, so that the police are led down a wrong route for sure, because there's no way that a dead person can defend his innocence.

Just a thought, but the academy says they were aware of their stuff being stolen. Strengthing their position - eliminating the theives?
Maybe he wasn't so innocent and the academy killed him and covered up their own involvement.. they're already pretty suspect as it is.
Maybe, maybe not.

We need a timeline to really know the value of this information. If this equipment was taken PRIOR to over a year ago, when the cube was stolen, then we know this could be a potential avenue for tracking the cube. But if not, it looks like it more relates to the killed pedestrian incident than anything else.
I agree, Jessica is the key to further info on this topic though... I don't think we've really figured out how people get from PC to Earth, though... We should have asked Dinah...
I don't think the equipment would necessarily gain one access to Earth. For the same reason that even the Academy doesn't know how to get the cube back to the Academy, even when we do find it... There's still a technology barrier. The only person who seems to have been able to do it is the yet unknown thief of the cube, who may not have even come over with the cube... perhaps through some mistake, the cube came by itself... Anyway, that's my spec and reasonings...
