[QUESTION] Culture Show newcomer with quick question

Hello everyone, please indulge me: I saw the games segment on the Culture Show this evening, but didn't really realise how interested I was towards the end and only paid attention then. I've been able to establish Perplex City is the game to find the cube, but is it the same game as the one where people were controlling little figures on their computer and interacting with people in a real city?

I've read a lot of forums and blogs about PPC this evening, but nothing's mentioned walking round a city, so I'm wondering if either there are two games (which both look fascinating), if I've missed something, or if PPC hasn't moved onto the 'arcade' stage yet.

Thanks.

I didn't see the Culture Show, but so far nothing has indicated that there is any arcade-type component to Perplex City: it's all real (er... you know. "real").

However, I'd encourage you to stick around and look into the Alternate Reality Game of it. It's quite exciting (especially for Londoners). There are (many) more posts about this here, and I'm sure I won't be the only one to respond to this.

Welcome! Smile

That sounds like Pac Manhattan.

Nope, the little people thing was a thing in Nottingham that the uni there is doing, but doesn't explicitly relate to ARGs, it is a different type of game, if you want to find out more, feel free to add me to your MSN messenger, my address is linked at the bottom of this post.

Also, the IRC server is good irc.chat-solutions.org, channel #syzygy

Hi Goldalene,

Glad to have you along for the ride!

They weren't very clear about all that were they? The arcade-game looking part (the same as the bit which involved wandering around the city with a PDA) is something completely different. A group called Blast Theory run events like these, one called Can You See Me Now? and one called Uncle Roy Is All Around You. Their games are live and typically last a few hours in a particular city - our game is live too, but is set to last for months and spans the entire globe. There'll be some real world events, but I anticipate this game will be a little more about the online element.

Hope that you stay to join in the fun!

A subsidiary question from another duffer

Where is the 'game' ? So far all I have seen is a load of guff on a website from an imaginary planet, some of which I actually read. I managed to 'register' - gawd knows how or why - and can now post with my own 'name' (hooray). Am I therefore playing the game ? Does the game consist in reading a lot of made up stuff for no purpose ? If so I could make up some stuff of my own and play with myself. Is the aim merely to perplex ? I was already perlexed by that other game called 'life' why would I need additional perplexing. I could go on, but would welcome comments before I do (or don't). Muchas gracias.

erm, yeah, the "game" part to it comes in puzzles and stuff that are released, it's a bit sparse around for puzzles on PxC at the moment, but the game for proper hasn't really started yet.

The best way to describe ARGs is like a book. Although you're just reading a load of not real stuff about an imaginary world (or imaginary events in this world), you do it to enjoy it. An ARG is just a book with a certain level of interactivity, which involves things happening in real life (see skywriters Very Happy)

erm, yeah Smile Hope that makes more sense to you and you're not just going to flame me Smile

Thanks. I wasn't sure if there was something I was missing and there's so much stuff that can be found via links it's difficult to know what is relevant and what isn't.

Yeah, I have that problem.

Long live BJG, whether he's in game or not.

Well, you're doing much better than me, I haven't even figured out how to register! Maybe I'm just not cut out for this sort of thing.

First, welcome!

Second, well, you have registered for Unfiction successfully, so don't worry about that!

If you meant register for PPC, then I'm afraid the only thing its possible to do at the moment is put your email into the PPC.com page. Then at some point in the nearish future (end may/start june) you will get an email saying the cards are now available and then the chaos starts!

Any more questions feel free to PM during office hours Smile

Thank you for the welcome.

And thank you for the info about registering, I had done what you said, but I was thinking that there must be more to it than that - oh, dear I'm already seeing puzzles where there are none! Smile

Finally made it here after hearing about this on the Culture show last night.

One question

Just how long has this thing been running for? There are posts going back to last Aug?

Thanks in advance
