I was going to post this in the BBC thread, but then realized it would be better to put it here. The whole concept of a television license has always been foreign to me. How do they know you have a TV? I vaguely remember hearing something about television detector vans, but is that for real, and have you actually seen one successfully detect an unlicensed television? Do you have to file papers every time you buy or sell a TV?

That would be fun! TV licenses are something we just learn to deal with I guess, I never thought it was odd until I realised other countries didn't have them, and then I only thought that they were annoying when I had to buy one. Basically, everyone in the UK who has a TV that is used for watching television, or other equipment to the same end, has to pay for a license, money that is then given to the BBC, our wonderful British Broadcasting Corporation. They show lots of programs about interesting things as we're discovering, and make Dr Who occasionally. Oh, and we have them to thank for hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy as well. They're good channels which, thanks to the license fees, are advert free.

As for how all this is enforced, that's when it gets silly. Basically, households with no license are presumed to be guilty. If you live in a house without a license then more than likely you've had a call from the inspectors at least once. Many people are repeatedly bothered by them, they refuse to believe that you don't watch TV because obviously no one could last long without it. The detectors, as I understand it, can just tell whether there is a TV being used in the household, so they go round all the houses without licenses hoping to catch someone. Usually they just don't bother with all that and 'ask' to come and have a look round - from what I've heard (a close friend had real trouble with them), they pretend that they have every right to come in when in fact they don't.

A lot of people dislike the fee for various reasons. Some argue that if they don't watch the BBC channels then they shouldn't have to pay for them. Others say that the BBC should learn to stand on its own two feet and run itself like any other TV company. To me, it's always just been the way it is, and I'm far too lazy to bother with a revolution. And I quite like the BBC with no adverts, but I do sympathise with people who don't like it and so don't want to pay for it. And for people without TVs, I don't like the way it is enforced. The worst I've had is threatening letters (while I was clearly licensed, they just sent them to everyone in uni) but that's bad enough.

In Australia.. our note money is plastic, we only have dollars and cents - it starts at 5c there is no such thing as 1 or 2 cents etc. We have the choice between free-to-air or subscription tv (foxtel digital) - No licence is required or forced - can watch tv without it. We drive on the left hand side of the road and have almost every natural wonder that can be experienced.. reef's, deserts, snow fields, rain forests, mountain ranges, caves, fields, etc. - the only thing we don't have is volcanoes. If I go for a 10 minute drive I can watch dolphins swimming along the coast as the sun sets. There are many cultures co-existing in one area and thing's are pretty good. The more I hear about other countries the luckier I feel being here. The season's treat us well and we have cold winters and can get all rugged up and head to the snow, and great summers where its easy to get a tan and can swim in the clean ocean and take everything nice and easy (its almost winter here at the moment). Houses have started to greatly increase in cost, but that is in the more populated area's. Everyone tends to flock to the city locations, however outside of the city area's it is possible to drive in one direction and rolling hills for an hour or so. We also have some of the strangest flora and fauna here.
=) The only gripe I have is that things weren't planned too well for the fast population growth we experienced after the Olympics. We now have water police that 'police' the use of water because its being wasted and the water supply is at an all time low. They are now going to tap into another water source and suck that dry rather than expanding the population outwards towards the other water source.
I know there are a few arg players in Australia and we haven't as of yet had a arg meet up. Actually, come to think of it.. I don't think there has been any a.r.g's within australia.. we only get the crumbs falling off larger global a.r.g's. I have given it thought about creating one in Australia.. and I know that it would take off (2dayfm catch the fugitive kinda thing took off in a big way). I am rambling now, complete and utter ramble =D If anyone in Australia wants to start up an a.r.g, pm me. I have some zany ideas =D

Hmmm, intriguing idea Invfish - although given that any major innovation normally takes a couple of years to grab the public over here - it might be a while before you can get any real support! I'd be into it but. And, yes... you forgot our Oz dollar nicks; $10 = bluey (um...because it's...blue) and the Lobster for the $20. These notes (I discovered while working in Europe and UK) are prized amongst cocaine users as they are tops for crushing rock!!

**Edit** Wo0T! Vetran! giggles foolishly...

Hopefully I'll be going to Australia this summer. My family on one side comes from there, so we're required to visit just about everywhere all at once to meet all the family members. Why can't they just choose one city and all stay there? At least it means there are plenty of sofas to crash on. I'm very much looking forward to it, it sounds like a wonderful place to be. Ooh, and hopefully I'll be able to get diving again as well. So much to do!
