This is exactly what i thought when i saw that on the back of the red and orange cards, and i think it fits in with the possible commercial promotion that fuels these games. It would totally make sense that they would use these as personal ids that could be a link for all their communication and/or financial transactions, which isn't so far off from the technology that we are capable of here on earth. and what better way to introduce some new piece of gadgetry than to convince a crapload of people on the internet that this will revolutionize life as we know it.

anyway here is a photoshoped image detail

I'm not sure about what you're referring to.. I just see a Nokia 9300.. where's the "key"?

Well, a scan of it has been posted above.

It's at the top of the card, as I said, overlapped slightly by a ripped piece of paper with the web address on.

thanks for the info, i didn't know that was an actual product. the earlier post fueled my suspicion, and my cynicism.

If you're referring to Ehsan, then I think he's saying that that picture is of a Nokia 9300, not of a key.

Ah, there also happens to be a very clear picture of a mobile phone at the bottom. I thought he meant that that was all he could see. I'm not up on my mobile phone technology Razz Thanks for the link, I see now.

I thought I may as well did this thread up as we now know for certain that the key is a physocal object and that it is some kind of gizmo

Also... seems like a perfect time to give my explanation of keys! So the Earthology guy at the Academy, Von, said that you should think of them as a combination of: "a phone, a TV, a video, a computer, a stereo, an MP3 player, a bank card, a passport, a house key..." and some other things he couldn't think of a good analogy for. And, um, mine's red with a little kite logo on it.

and I know there is a thread that mentions this quote but that is based on her latest entry not the Key specifically =P

Perplexians are more futuristic than us =/ except we have this technology now.. just can't use it. Perhap's Perplex City is the same as our world, the only difference is that they don't have a patent office? =P

I think they have a better system of co-operation between companies. I mean, we're perfectly able to create Key like things right now just there's too much trouble getting everyone to cooperate. You need some one to do the phone, someone to do the MP3 player, someone to do the internet password thing, someone to do the house key ability... it's all very complicated. Different businesses on Earth just don't work together that well, in general.

sounds like my Nokia 6630- it's a phone, mp3 player, video camera, camera, address book, organiser, can hold credit card details and has GPRS internet... and it's not even state of the art! I read somewhere about a japanese company putting chips similar to Transport For London's Oyster Cards into phones so you can upload money onto it and use it in shops and at vending machines by touching the phone to a panel. That technology could be used as a "key" to gain access to sites etc too if your computer had one of these panels... So we're not that far off having these things anyway.

Speculation: could the Nokia 9300 actually be the earth equivalent of a Key? Or, to put it less obliquely, could Nokia be one of the (not-a-)game's backers? And while I'm on the subject, can anyone identify the device used on card #110? Is it one of Nokia's as well?

Nokia Game

Interestingly, to support that, Nokia Game ran 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, but not last year.. Interesting that they should tail off their ARG (arguably the first) just as we get all this hype on new ones.

On the other hand, the companies that are running it (mind candy ltd and perplex city ltd) don't appear to share directors or any sort of ownership with Nokia. In fact, Perplex City Ltd. appears to have an independent vulture capitalist on board with regards to the funding (as well as the firebox CEO and creator)

It could just as easily be any other smart phone out there, be it Symbian, Palm, or Windows. They all can pretty much access the internet, play movies, store personal and banking information, etc. I even use mine with a folding keyboard to access IRC.

To me, it looks like the "keys" are just a piece of plot mechanics, allowing the PMs to only post some contentent on the Sentinel without having to write a complete newspaper. Maybe I am wrong and maybe things will change in the future, but it seems like if this were about a product endorcement, the product would be much more closely tied to being a cube than being a key. I have not yet seen the BBC TV segment, but I am going to guess that any newbie coming away from that is going to remember "cube" and not "key." When Perplex City is finally solved, if a product is unveiled at the time, and if it is cubic--those people who had a fleeting memory of the game but never participated are going to have product recognition. "Hey, that is related to that cool game I hard about last year but never got around to joining."

Well, my immediate theory on the keys was that the PMs are deliberately withholding acccess to certain 'clues' already available - plenty of Sentinel articles listed that we can't read, for instance- until such time as certan clues are cracked and players are maybe given a password or something that allows them to possess a key. Remember: there is that section of the paper that allows you to authorize (although I agree, it doesn't come up with any fields to enter data into).

In other words, is key access going to be some kind of prize for solving certain of the puzzles?

Given that the 'equivalent' of a key in our world might be a Nokia phone (or whatever) could it be that we'll end up using our own tech as an interface with the Perplex City set - up?? Seems like the game could end up working at different levels of 'reality', but then, surely that would be the whole point?? After all, we don't know that Perplex City isn't to be considered some kind of 'virtual world' in the first place...So what would be happening is that virtual characters are reaching out to make contact with real people, in real time...which is essentially what the game seems to be telling us is occurring anyway...it's all recursion from that point on...
