Subject: Mars Day Still On

Date: 26 August 2003

Dear Dale:

This is just a notice that our Mars Day event will still be held tomorrow despite the recent fire at the Library.

THE AGLAURA PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS MARS DAY, AUGUST 27, 2003

Have you ever dreamed about traveling to the planet Mars, hitching a ride aboard one of NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers? Even wishing probably won't make that come true. Now, your dream can come true, when you visit the Aglaura Public Library on Mars Day, Wednesday, August 27, 2003.

On August 27, 2003, Mars will be within 34,646,418 miles of Earth. This will be the closest that Mars has come to our planet in over 60,000 years, affording us some of the best viewing opportunities since Neanderthals looked skyward. To celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime event, the Aglaura Public Library is having a very special event, all day long.

Starting at noon and running every hour until midnight, the Aglaura Public Library will present Mars at its Best, a live discussion about the planet's approach. Everyone can participate and learn about the ongoing missions studying Mars and the latest launches scheduled to reach the planet at the end of 2003 from our visiting experts. The Aglaura Public Library will then set up their telescopes and video monitors on the Library's lawns beginning at dusk. The Aglaura Public Library has even secured a "Noble One" 13-foot-long, 16-inch telescope for an even closer view of the planet. Thanks to a local NJ business for lending it to us for the night.

This astronomical event could be the most dramatic and spectacular Mars apparition you or any of your ancestors will ever see. The Red Planet has progressively been getting closer to Earth with each passing night. By late August, the reddish point of light in our night sky will appear more than six times larger and shine some 85 times brighter than normal.

On August 28, Mars will be at "opposition," the moment when the Sun, Earth, and Mars will form a straight line. Mars comes to opposition about every 26 months. But because of the elliptical orbits of Earth and Mars, this one will be superior. When it arrives at opposition, Mars will be very near its closest point to the Sun, called perihelion. Such perihelic oppositions themselves are somewhat rare, occurring every 15 to 17 years. (Though Mars' opposition comes on August 28, it will be closest to Earth on August 27.) At the close approach, the Red Planet will be brighter than Jupiter and all the stars in the night sky, outshone only by Venus and the Moon.

The event, including the telescope viewing is free to the public.

We hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Agatha Dobbs
Librarian

My friends,

Things are happening much too quickly. In order to keep you updated, I've modified the program here to update with new messages as necessary. We can't afford to wait 24 hours anymore.
