Hmmm....i think I may be over-qualified!! Very Happy

Well, maybe i'll apply for an interview anyway - at least that way I will find out where MCHQ is and put everyone's mind at rest.

Heh, I think they'll have that base covered. I imagine you'd be interviewed in a totally seperate location, purely to prevent such opportunisticness.

Yes, I know that's not a real word.

I'm surprised they are looking to do things in J2SE, as opposed to the J2EE buzzword-compliant bandwagon everyone is jumping on. It's kind of smart, though, as most of the J2EE "enterprise solutions" are processor intensive and/or expensive (albeit easier to maintain in the long run). It always seems the J2SE solutions to slow code is "write it better" and the J2EE solution is "buy more hardware." Smile

If only I lived in London and still wrote Java...

Shocked

Sounds like they are creating their own unforum like forum. Which they can indeed do and they will pick up a community via Perplex City.
I am just curious as to where this will all lead. Sounds like arg cell division to me.
Do you think they are going to create their own forums just for Perplex City use? or are they going to keep the userbase here?

Im not too fussed.. I'm in these for the puzzles and the sparks of wisdom these things yield... and unforums breeds that kind of stuff =)

*edit: I changed some of the text so that it reads better*

if they make forums and community type stuff tho, won't they be considered quite in game-ish? just cos of the suspension of disbelief stuff they have going on on their website and almost being part of the game even though we know they're behind the curtain n all that. it would seem strange to have an official forum and people to be talking all meta and OOG on it... so i think there will still be a need for the UF forum and for the wiki n primer n stuff, maybe whatever they want to come up with will either be for some kind of ongoing product/whatever after the 'game', or somehow part of the in game story itself?

rach =)

Yeh it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were interested in building an ongoing community around the City and the puzzle solving (there's certainly lots of potential for 'spinoff' stories!) ... and i suppose that would allow for somewhere for in-game characters to interact, whereas Unfiction is much too Meta for their purposes ...

On top of it all of course, they don't necessarily want us creepy ARG types scaring away ppl who may just play casually Wink -- the ARG community tends to dig real deep and spec every passing comment, which is just too much (too much reading / too much time / too confusing) for a more general market

(and my bets are on Mind Candy trying to build a following beyond PPC anyway - hence the "initially ... Perplex City projects")

Edit: just read E3 thread, and noting Jeb's post: my observation isn't so clever anymore Wink

I'd speculate that if they create forums they'll be entirely OOG, even though they could technically use them in an IG way (without stabbing logic in the face) - I just think it would be an annoyance that would drive a lot of players away. Nonetheless, I'm sure player-created resources will continue to flourish.

Now, I'm reaching a bit here, but the AI game wrap-up by Adrian features a "future things ARGs could do" section that includes some ideas we've already seen. Here's an excerpt regarding forums...

Quote:
Create a space for players. As a moderator of the Cloudmakers, there wasn't a day that went by without us worrying about bandwidth problems or whether the YahooGroups server was going to crash right at the Tuesday updates. Giving players an empty space in which to discuss the game with the functionality of YahooGroups plus a good messageboard system will immediately put you up several notches in the esteem of your patrons.

It will cause you grief and it will cost you money; the bandwidth charges will be high and you'll have to make sure that the system stays online without crashing unless you enjoy being insulted by your players. In the end though, it's worth it because not only will your players appreciate it but it will also give you increased access and possibly an element of control over the community. Not too much control though, since dedicated game communities can get touchy about that sort of thing.

If you're feeling really generous, you'll also pay for the domain name registration and webhosting of a proper central fan site, just like www.cloudmakers.org (that is, if that isn't already wrapped into the community tools you're giving people in the first place)
