Trout me if this is a dupe, but I was unable to find mention.

Ah... the city
Category: me
Time: 07:07 PM

Went to the market in the south of the old town yesterday. The real market, not that ridiculous "quaint gifts from Perplex City" market they direct the tourists from the towns to. I love it, it's so grungy, that mixture of old and new. It has almost the feeling of an old town fair, sometimes, with people selling weird bits of carved stone they claim to have fetched up from the catacombs (at enormous personal cost and danger to life and limb, of course). Most of them look so obviously fake that it's kind of funny. At least, it's obvious to me. But that's because I've been down there; there's an entrance underneath my dad's "official Academy residence". We were never allowed down there alone of course, but when Scarlett and I were little, and we nagged him enough, sometimes he'd take us for a walk. And (be jealous, be very jealous) not just the bits they show the tourists, but some other places too. Nothing terribly mysterious, but more of those strange mosaics on the ceilings (how did they get up there? Why those symbols? Weird). I always loved it down there; shame I'm a bit too grown-up to ask my dad to let me have a look round now.

Catacombs? Under the Academy?

No, it's new. And yes, there are catacombs! Smile

From the Academy website:

Quote:
Places of interest

The Anaduna Corridors: the underground passageways that lead under the main buildings of the Academy provide quick access for students hurrying between classes but are notoriously labyrinthical. By tradition, new students are never provided with maps to the corridors but instead are given cryptic clues to work out the key to the corridors' layout. With their moving walkways, the corridors can be the quickest way to travel around the Academy, but unless you understand how they link together, you could find yourself traveling in circles. Rumours persist that some students have entered the Anaduna Corridors and never returned... their ghosts are said to haunt the halls, still searching for their elusive lecture hall or tutorial room.

The Founder's Gallery: contains the famous statues of the seven founders of the Academy. It remains open to visitors throughout the year.

Catacombs: deeper and more extensive than the Anaduna corridors, the Perplex City catacombs stretch to form a huge sprawling maze under a large part of the city. They are known to extend as far as the Newguard Ruins and several entrances were found on the coast during the construction of the Mobius Strip. The catacombs are out-of-bounds to students and most of the entrances across the city have been sealed as they are unstable and occasionally prone to collapse. However, some tours take in the parts of the catacombs directly beneath the Academy and fellows have been known to use these tunnels occasionally to take a short cut when running late for lectures. Visiting the catacombs without an official guide is strictly forbidden due to the ease of getting lost in the hundreds of miles of twisting passages.

Not only is she too grown-up, but also after the fiasco she pulled recently with the media I'd be surprised if S heeded her requests.

hmm, one wonders if these catacombs are as secure as the other ways to get in or out of the academy unheeded? quite a handy escape route if you knew what you were doing...

rach =)

Indeed. As the villainous Stapleton said of the moorland swamps in Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles:

'I should think that there are few men who know it better than I do...'

But, seriously, endlessly twisting passages - it's giving me nasty memories of the Maze section in 'Warlock of Firetop Mountain' (one for the old timers, there).

No, no, no. Whenever endlessly twisting passages come up, you should think of the old Adventure/Collosal Caves text adventure.... or was that Zork?
Code:
You are in a maze of twisty passages, all different.
> north
You are in a maze of twisty passages, all alike.
> south
You are in a twisty maze of passages, all different.
> north
...etc...
Your lantern has gone out.  If you move in the dark, you are likely to fall in a pit or be eaten by a Grue.

Death-trap dungeon...fantastic! Appointment with F.E.A.R...rubbish!

My book-shelf was green as a kid (except for the bits that were Choose your own adventure...The Horror of High ridge used to give me nightmares...especially the ending where you get a tomahawk in the back!)

Shocked Silly (will have to suffice for scared stupid)

Me too! - I mean - after you'd read through half the adventure only to be killed at a wrong choice, your not exactly going to go right back to the start again are you??

My spec on the catacombs is that they aren't fully explored, and so someone may have found some ancient device to get to Earth or something. That might be how The Academy even knew Earth existed, was from it's studies of the catacombs, maybe some of the murals depicting Earth or something.

[Spec]Quirky Acuity market update

Did anyone also notice that "official academy residence" is also in speech marks? Perhaps this means Sente has more than 1 residence at the Academy? Does he have several offices and a lab perhaps? Not sure if it helps in anyway but might be something that has some bearing on future locations. p.s. I'm a newbie too, been around for about a month, so bear with me if I trout up! Smile

Haha! You, too? I used to employ a set of bookmarks to recursively try a couple of different sets of outcomes--sort of a pre-web "back button." Very Happy
