[SOLVED] #120 - Green Maze - "Cube Tube" (E3)

Here is one of the two cards that were given out at E3 this week by Mind candy. The other is called "Sweet Dreams" which has it's own thread that you can find by using the Search function. Very Happy

This card is a maze.

here is the front, and here is the back.

The card is worth 20 Perplex Points and the Green Maze set is worth 120.

The text reads as follows:
Quote:

"
IMAGINE YOU NEED TO PUSH A MARBLE FROM THE TOP ARROW TO THE BOTTOM BY THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE ROUTE. AND IT CAN T JUMP THE GAPS BUT CAN TRAVEL UPWARDS. WHAT'S THE ORDER IN WHICH YOU PASS THE CHECKPOINTS?
"

The checkpoints are those red dots you see around the maze and they are as follows going in a clockwise order...

a
c
e
f
d
b

Note that the start is below "a" and the finish is above "f".

Also keep in mind that the two colors you see are not two seperate tracks to follow. As the instructions indicate, the made is hollow. (Hence the name.)

So don't let that slip you up.

The card also mentions that gust puzzle architect and artest for this card are both Andrea Gilbert.

I've solved this but instead of posting it, I'm going to do this because there are not a lot of you out there who were able to go to E3...

The first person to reply to this post with the correct answer will get the actual physical card mailed to them by myself. (After I get your info in a PM of course.)

I do have more then one extra of this card, more on that later. Smile

I got B C A F D as well. You could fit E in between B and C, but it'd be a detour.

Yeah,
i get b,e,c,a,f,d if you have to go through every checkpoint, which it doesn't say you have to, but then again it doesn't say you can't backtrack either.

backtracking wouldn't be the shortest route.

I am going with BECAFD..

although if I do the maze backwards I come up with either :

BCEAFD
BECAFD

Which both have the exactly the same length. BECAFD can be done two ways and one of those ways happens to be shorter than the rest =)

EDIT: *typo 'one' shouldve read 'way', which is does now =) (got all excited and typed fast)*[/b]

i agree -- the shortest route if all checkpoints have to be visited has to involve backtracking -- checkpoints in rallying all have to be visited - thats why they are called CHECKpoints Very Happy

Ambiguous card wording, eh?? I suppose 'shortest possible route' might just mean 'without repeating any checkpoint twice' (not sure if that's easy to do, actually...), so 'B,E,C,A,F,D' would then be appropriate, even if it's not the shortest *possible* route if we ignore some of the checkpoints...

While we're at it, is there a specific drawing that the maze is inspired by? I figured it was very like an Escher print that I'd once seen, but I can't remember which one...

And, again, we have a string of letters for answer which doesn't seem to yield very much...

surely 'shortest possible route' has to mean not including checkpoint e as, like people have said, it is a detour. There really is only one route through the maze, so the 'shortest' path must cut off the detour, otherwise it would just be THE path, not 'the shortest'.
Hope that's actualy readable..

Unless it's simply shorthand for 'shortest route encompassing all the checkpoints'. Agreed - it would take some doing to come up with a longer route...

As the answer seems pretty unrevelatory anyway, I guess the jury has to remain out on this one, until such time as more information is revealed...
