It has to be b c a f d, going via the e wouldn't make sense. Especially as there are 2 routes of equal distance you could take to go via the e.

Because the card is not entirely clear on if all checkpoints need to be visited I will accept both answers.

That means bearq and nacht (who was the fist to give the "detour" route) get one each of the Cube Tube cards I have.

Okay, i'm probably being a complete idiot, but am taking the 'can't jump gaps' rule a little too literally? The way I read it means that you can't get to anymore checkpoints than 'b', let alone finish it.

Please can someone explain a little clearer what the rules actually are? Is it that while travelling upwards, the marbe can float through a gap, and fall through one in a downwards direction too? If so, this also then poses a question os perspective, as in a 2D world the puzzle only really contains ups and downs (is somewhat diagonal), but in a 3D world, there's lots of acrosses too!

Why do I always have to over-anaylse everything?

RobPal...not sure exactly what image of the puzzle is in your head. I think that perhaps you are seeing the bits where tubes go over or under each other as gaps...which is the only way I can see of not visiting anything other than b.

As far as rules go...you can travel along the tubes with your little marble (including where they cross each other as they're going behind or over...incidentally, I think they added the stuff about being able to go upwards in case people thought of the marble too literally and started applying gravity), but when there is a break in the tubes as signified by the paler square faces, you can't cross them.

I think if you forget everything in your second paragraph you'll get it!

Hope this helps

Smile

Edited to try and improve clarity...in my world that means I added more ellipses.

I think the trick of it is to apply the thinking that we discussed on this thread slightly earlier - you have to visualise the marble going *into* the maze as though it were hollow, and you could hold it in your hands. Then, you would be able to manipulate the sculpture up and down, tipping it to one side, reversing it etc., all the time guiding the marble along, until it falls out of the 'hole' at the other end. The reason the gaps can't be 'crossed' is because, if the marble is rolling around inside the hollow tubes of the maze, as soon as it reaches a cut off, it simply can't roll any further, and you'd have to find another way to allow it to travel on through the network.

At least, that's the way I visualised it. Does that help at all??

I am going to have to agree with the BCAFD solution, as well. I refrained from reading the thread until I was able to take the time to solve it for myself and ended up interpreting the rules as "the shortest possible route (without having to touch all checkpoints)." Besides, checkpoint E is a little ambiguous since it is hard to tell if it the vertex where the pipes come together or a pipe segment--and if it is a pipe segment, can you hit the checkpoint from either side of the gap?

I ended up printing a copy of the puzzle and drawing lines blocking routes that led to one or more dead-end paths. After solving, I redid it electronically, making liberal use of the "erase" tool, and have a copy stored here:
http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/notes/120-maze-nodeadends.jpg

So, really, I do not see anything revolutionary about the answer. In trying to take it a step further, to see where things would go, I looked at the checkpoint list as the hex number 0xBCAFD, which gives 772,861 decimal, 02745375 octal, or a very large binary number (1011 1101 1010 1111 1101). I see nothing terribly interesting about this line of reasoning, unfortunately.

incidentally, hex no.s #becafd, #0bcafd and #bcafd0 are all lovely shades of blue in photoshop. but seriously, i dont think were supposed to be looking for anything revolutionary in these answers. as far as i can see theyre just stuff to put into the leaderboard and make the 'game' seem fun. the clues are in the subtleties. but i've already said most of this over in the points mean prizes thread.

rach =)

I was obviously much more tired than I thought when I first looked at the maze. I just looked at it again and it all makes complete sense. It's amazing what a good nights sleep can do the brain cells!

My answer to follow...

EDIT: BECAFD if all checkpoints are to be reached. BCAFD if the shortest route is the main aim.
