I rather imagined the Cube functioning in the same way as an aerial. Your conventional aerial gets hit by radio waves, exciting the electrons within and thus generating a signal to listen to. The cube was unusual because it didn't pick up any PPC activity, but did 'resonate' from signals originating from our world.

Of course, the fact that the cube has been stolen and yet the PPC people can still communicate with us rather destroys that theory. Unless there are other, lesser cubelike artefacts that operate in a similar way... perhaps the Receda Cube was the only one with the raw potential to open an interdimensional bridge to our world, hence the 'not being able to retrieve it' element.

By the way, I rather imagined that the Cube thieves were also transported to Earth at the same time as the cube (using the cube, in fact) and buried it themselves. Which means only one thing - they're still among us!

i am quite hesitant to say perplex city exists and can only communicate by way of the internet. Recalling the project syzygy, we know there is a stronger tendency fFor print material. books, newspapers, postcards, stuff fFrom your printer, things of this sort. Evere seen the fFilm NeverEnding Story? or played Myst/Riven/Uru? I suggest Perplex City exists in some sort of printed universe. Or we exist in their printed universe. Or both. Either way, They read about us in their books, maybe watch us dance around in the pages of the books, like winnie the pooh. Silly old Violet-bear.

Hard to tell what is coming directly via the Perplexians, and what is being communicated to us via their 'earth - based representatives' at Mind Candy, though, I'd say. It sounds pretty complicated, but I could visualise a scenario where Mind Candy are producing and distributing clues on the Perplexians' behalf, and we are never really getting in contact with them, except via things like the Sentinel and e - mail.

Of course, that does raise the question of how the Perplexians transfer information to Mind Candy associates in the first place
