Blog post from The Defect (5/20)

On his blog.

Bunch of funny symbols in an image.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Alright. The symbols are Wingdings. Use Character Map to translate from symbol to hex. Notice, though, the image is reversed horizonally, so all the Wingdings are backwards. Reversing them yourself, you should get this hex:

2f 73 73 68 67 66 73 72 71 2f

Change to another font and see what those symbols translate to. It becomes this:

/sshgfsrq/

Now, remember, the image was reversed. So, reverse this string and get:

/qrsfghss/

Try a simple ROT. Now, you get this:

/defstuff/

And that gives us

this URL

More stuff! Woo!

Also, take a close look at the pic. Blow it up if you have to.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Guess that means that the pic is stegged! Smile

Ok, I don't play this ARG, but Max just gave me the puzzle, and I couldnt resist. Here is where I am so far.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

First of all, the key.txt is octal. It translates to a very long string of binary which im not posting here. Use http://nickciske.com/tools/octal.php to translate it if you want.

Anyway, the binary translates to:

7569772073772079786B70690D
0A6F6369206D71207376796469
0D0A696F632067632078636378
770D0A75697720737720636867
676469620D0A75697720737720
66656A646900

Our good friend hex.

This in turn translates to:

uiw sw yxkpi
oci mq svydi
ioc gc xccxw
uiw sw chggdib
uiw sw fejdi

This is definitely not a rot, a transposition cipher or a vigenere. Its a simple substitution, but it's too short for the program I use. It may be relevant to the rest of the game, in which case I cant help you. I think the starting point should be the word 'xccxw', im pretty sure there arent many words in the English (could be foreign) language which do that. Anyway, good luck.

I had gotten this far, too, Darkstar, but when I ran it through a monoalphabetic cypher solver and it came up empty, I figured I might be wrong. That was when I gave up for the night. Sad

Very Happy Woohoo! A sort of a solve for me! I think...

And you'll kick yourselves!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Using a vingere cypher and the word "key" (the name of the file) as the, well, key, and being careful to take out the spaces and returns, we get:

key is angry
key is irate
key is testy
key is excited
key is huffy

Oh yeah go me!

But... where now?

Got a solution posted first, finally.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

I used Camoflauge on the JPG and tried various synonyms of "huffy" for the password. "Annoyed worked" There is a message inside the JPG which warns that LeM plans on killing Alesha when she gets to Uruguay.

The message hidden inside the JPG reads:

oh god, my the group -- libere el mundo -- they are have alesha. this was not supposed to happen. she was tried to come here, to rescue her james, and now... they plan to kill her. theyve have already tried once as you well know. this is not good.

Jason can you explain what camoflauge is and where you input this password to get a message out of the JPG? That part of this puzzle still has me stumped.

Thanks in advance.

camouflage is a program, if u type it into google u should find the latest version and install it. then if u find the picture from the blog and save it to somewhere u can find easy. next right click on the picture and click on uncamouflage, and it will ask you for a password. put in annoyed and it will bring up the files that are "hidden" inside the image. it's kind of like an exe-binder but for piccy's Very Happy

Camouflage is available at http://camouflage.unfiction.com/

You install it and then you can right click on an image that you have downloaded (or other file) and choose the Uncamouflage option. It will then come up and ask you for the password and then you just enter it in there.
