Relying on a system being secret to keep something secure is known as security through obscurity and is generally frowned upon in security circles. So while I agree that the Academy would probably want a custom-built system I would have expected that it would be based on principles that have been widely attacked and found to be secure.
I agree Seej, that pretty standard stuff, but what i think yanka ment (though i could be wrong) was that using the Keys for the Academy security system is like NASA, NSA, CIA, FBI, MI5 using the same password hashing algorithm that windows does (LM/NTLM).
