I believe that the quotation marks around "official academy residence" is due to Violet's feelings towards her father and the academy - sort of adding a ironique twist to the word Official...

My two cents..

Isn't the official academy residence thing because S has a residence on the Academy campus as master of the Academy, and keeps somewhere a bit more palatial and modern somewhere off-campus. I'm sure I read something like that on one of the sites....

From the academy website:

Quote:
One Taversen Square was originally home to Aetiant Taversen, the Academy's first Master, having been bequeathed to her by her father Naskent. It remains the official residence for the Master, although more spacious accommodations are also provided elsewhere in the city.

What that seems to mean is that everyone is right. The 'official academy residence' *is* a separate residence, but Violet (little anarchist that she is) is getting riled about the idea that having such a thing is a bit bourgeois...

sorry but, violet - anarchist? I imagine the reference to more spacious accommodations means that the 'official' residence isn't quite up to her exacting (bourgeois) standards... It is just a little old house after all... It'd be kept as a symbolic gesture only... (makes sense anyway - in australia the PM's 'official' residence is in canberra but who'd wanna live there? so theyve always lived in another place in sydney instead)

oh and re the catacombs, 2 interesting things been mentioned:

1. they connect up all over the place (its suggested even the recently discovered newgate ruins are part of the original complex)

2. the perplexians know nothin bout where they came from; violet's mention of the designs on the roof -- "how'd they get up there" confuses me a little, it suggests the 'catacombs' aren't the bent over tunnels we have but are really quite large -- in scifi terms it suggests those futuristic places where it turns out the tunnels underneath are our own former subway systems, or like the tunnels in the matrix... taken a little further also fits in with the idea of finding an artifact that allows them to communicate with us Wink

and finally, for little less out-there spec, i'm betting the tunnels play a role in the theft....

From the PC history:

Quote:
The Mazy River could at one time be "panned" for silver and the much later silver mines under much of the city eventually became part of the extensive run of catacombs.

Just to add some more detail....

these catacombs have to have some sort of secret entrance into the academy. The thief could have been disturbed by fran while escaping through them...
