anyone read "the search for the dice man" by luke rhinehart? it's the sequel to the famous novel, and it features 2 central characters infiltrating a dice cult and gaining access to their commune, where everything is decided randomly by throwing dice.

the fact that dice are cubes is another interesting coincidence... but obviously it's not relevant at all, just wondering if anyone else was getting similar echoes

The question is: Why Violet? She is just a librarian. And why was she granted access to the compound when others have been denied access?

Maybe she's getting the access simply because she isn't part of the media. She didn't seem to imply that she was going to check out the big to-do happening, simply as someone who was interested in checking out the compound. They probably think she's coming out because she's interested in being recruited or whatever.

I'm putting my money on her finding someone there who isn't totally "turned" and using them as a spy of sorts. Either that, or being all rebellious and "joining" under the pretense of filtering information out of the camp.

Violet's obviously got a reputation as the wild child of the Kiteway family- reinforced by her comments to the media about Sente having stolen the cube, and her frequenting gambling dens etc.

I think the Recons would easily fall for her feigned interest in joining up as they'd see it as her ultimate act of rebellion... it wouldn't be entirely out of character. Also, they'd love to have the daughterof the Academy eschew science and technology in favour of their theological approach- perfect PR for the recons! It'd be like Jenna Bush joining CND or something

A bit strange altogether, I think:

I agree with Mattlock that if she's already known to the Recons. as a potential 'convert', then that might ease her way into the compound - after all, such sects are always on the lookout to welcome new proselytes.

But it could simply be a recon. double - cross, and they're intending to hold Violet hostage when they get her!!

What really bothers me though is that Violet has always appeared to be a fairly intelligent gal - yet she's suggesting going on a 'deep cover' mission (with minimal preparation - note) and then discussing getting ice cream in the next paragraph!!

Either she *is* hiding something from us which makes her far more dangerous/well - placed to do this sort of thing than we have previously suspected, or she's actually preparing to do something that is just *REALLY, REALLY* asking for trouble!! (Just like characters in Twin Peaks used to do on a worryingly regular basis...)...

Equally, don't you think it's as if Violet's been reading our minds (or, at least, our speculations about what she might be up to) - you never know - this may all be our responsibility at one remove - I just hope we don't end up with Sente breathing down our necks if something does go wrong!

Maybe she just doesn't feel threatened by the Recons. She's the sort of girl who doesn't seem to care that much about what others think or what consequences her actions might cause, so it could just be that she doesn't see potential danger in going in there. Not that she's naive: after all, she doesn't mind going to dodgy poker bars to play with lots of real money and risk losing, does she? Maybe the Recons like her because she bad-mouthed her Dad in the press!
