[SOLVED] SD3 Journals{SD 3/My Journal/journal00369.txt, etc}

As I haven't seen anyone posting or working on the journal entries I thought I would start a post to talk about the four journal entries on the third SD card. A few random thoughts as I try to figure this one out.

One theme that seems to be running through these is scheduling and timing of various meetings/appointments. The days Friday, Saturday and Sunday are never mentioned during the entries and other than one mention of 10:30 all of the times are multiples of three (0600, 0900, 1500).

Also interesting is the "odd times even" in the subject of the 00371 message followed by the statement in the entry that he has been home three days though it feels twice as long. 3 times 2

Unlike some of the previous messages there isn't any clue in the properties section of the documents (in word or explorer), nothing in a header/footer, etc. I tried opening the docs in a browser to see if the "Home" reference had anything to do with homepage, etc. - no dice.

I've also tried paying around with the various days as numbers (Monday = 1 or 2 depending upon whether you view Sunday or Monday as the start of the week, Tuesday as 2 or 3, etc.) but didn't come up with anything interesting.

Anyway, I figured that this post might at least help to get some people thinking about the jorunal entries, the text of which is below.

Subject: Sick

I woke up this morning with a fever and a migraine headache. There's no way I can work today. It's going to make the rest of the week Hell, but I need to just stay home and rest today.

Feeling better as the day wears on. I should be OK to go to work tomorrow.

Subject: Staying Close to Home

Although I am feeling somewhat better today, I decided to still stay close to home and do what I could without traveling too far. That still leaves me with an extremely busy week, however. I'm hoping may be able to switch some things around I have scheduled for later in the week.

Tomorrow's 10:30 appointment can probably be moved to next Monday at 09:00, while Thursday's 15:00 is a possibility for either Tuesday or Wednesday next week, probably around the same time.

I didn't realize how late it was already. I must be up at 06:00 so I'm off to bed.

Subject: Odd Times Even at Home

I've been home three days that I wish didn't feel like twice the number. The wife has been unbearable but, then again, I have not been very lovable myself. When we get our damn stubborn minds set, there's no swaying the either of us.
And that's only a small part of the story. Both the kids are acting up also, but there's something really weird in what the Hell they even are doing that defies explanation.

I hear someone calling.

Subject: Peace at Last

Despite how I usually complain about it, I'm happy to be on the road again. I've never been good at conflict and sometimes it's so much easier to just run than fight.

I still need to finish rescheduling the appointments I moved, and next week is already filling up. I have three stops planned for Monday, four on Tuesday, two on Wednesday, and a tentative meeting for Thursday booked already.

Some ideas:
"Home" could refer to home keys on a keyboard or number pad.
"Odd times Even" could refer to odd numbers times even numbers
so 3 times twice that is 3*6 =18.

ceaser cipher/vignere cipher

I've tried running various ceasar cipher and vignere cipher decrypts using ROT6 & ROT 18 decryption for the Ceaser cipher (in fact I ran ROT1 - ROT25 just in case) as well as vignere cipher trying to use oddtimesevenathome, oddtimeseven, eighteen, and six as various keys and got nothing more than garbage on several of the journal entries.

Hopefully this will at least save someone else the trouble of trying these should anyone else be trying to determine whether there is anything we're missing in the journal entries.

Virgil - that wacky king of code - gets the credit for this one. Rats Very Happy

Virgil wrote:
In the My Journal folder, journal00371.txt contains a clue in the subject
line: "Odd Times Even at Home." Going through the rest of the journal entry,
I counted the number of letters in each word, assigning a "0" to the
odd-lettered words and a "1" to the even ones. Stringing them together
yielded:

01101101011001010110100101101110011001100111001001100101011101010110111001100100

which opens ppics2.zip in the My Pictures folder (and also happens to be
"meinfreund" in binary--clever one, that Gunter.)

Well, I'm guessing that's what the PMs thought the exact same thing about us as well by having Virgil jump in with the solve.

There may be something time sensitive coming or we were attacking something we should be up to yet. Like the outcome of the wordsearches...

Did you use the string of binary digits? I tried the ascii decode first, but it's the binary that actually opens the file.

Yep, I did use the binary. I also tried downloading the whole sd3 file again...3 times in all. It just won't open. I know Enaxor is having the same problem. It's a mystery.

I hope you did not omit the first "0"?
It is important to use the string "01101101011001010110100101101110011001100111001001100101011101010110111001100100" and not "1101101011001010110100101101110011001100111001001100101011101010110111001100100"
Also, it appears that Windows XP's own ZIP engine can't handle long passwords, use WinZip or similar instead!
