Hi!
Sorry, lack of sleep Wink
I had assumed that the image you had linked to was of a "normal", horizontal uffizi, not a "drill down". I had verified the drill down manually, but hadn't verified if there was a "normal" appearance, I just didn't read the post correctly Sad

Yes, heist is suggestive and the fact that uffizi is (kind of) hidden, vertically.
Your code seems to be just fine from what I verified manually, the problem is before the keyboard (me, lack of sleep Wink )

Hey rose if that is a puzzle then maybe this is a clue... it is from brain scan... you have to click on caption... look at the words on the computer screen in the picture...

I also just realized that "caravaggio" is in the puzzle, too, which is of course a major artist whose paintings are shown at the Uffizi gallery. Virgil also talks about "a hundred Caravaggios" in connection with Nisha in one of his rants,

If someone can help me figure out how to make a release build from VS.net 2003 that will work on people's comps, I'll release a utility I wrote tonight that lets you manipulate the word cube. This is a legit version, I got it from my uni before i graduated on their MSDN sub (which was awesome I might add). I've only released on Borland in the past year.

In release mode, I have a bunch of files. In addition to the .exe, they are: .pch, .pdb, .res, .resources, .idb, and .pdb. I know the objs aren't needed.

Edit: I deleted all those files and it still works on my comp. Must be a system library or maybe a .NET thing I have installed on this box. Suck. Still open to suggestions though.

Edit2: On suggestion from the guniea pig, I decided to upload it anyways in hopes that it will work for someone. It is an .exe, so if you don't trust me, don't run it.

The main gist is that you use the text file output of the word searches from like page 3 (also attached here) using the open file dialog. Then you have to put your brain in 3d space. It's a x y z grid (with z being the depth), and 1 1 1 being the upper front left. and 20 20 20 being the lower back right. It does not wrap or do anything cool like that. You can rotate and such, and the "current slice" is the slice in the depth direction. There is only one slice shown at a time, it isn't a cool 3d rotating spinning text cube or anything. And there probably are bugs in the some of the logic. Let me know and I'll take care of it.

The word look up always uses the current rotations upper front left as 0,0,0. Hopefully this'll help in some way, otherwise it was sorta fun to do. Smile

I'm guessing you created a "windows application"?
As long as you don't have any files outside the application referenced, just the .exe is all you need. Make a "release" version, not "debug" version. (I haven't checked out what you uploaded)
For people to run it, they'll need to have the .NET framework installed, which probably in a lot of cases, it is.

It is in release mode. The PC I have here has all the current patches and such (thanks IT), and it won't run here either gives a library error. Gah this sucks, feels like I wasted last night. Thanks M$. I didn't see a compatibility mode or anything either (not sure if there is a release configuration dialog somewhere, but I couldn't find one).

Right click on your solution and/or project in the solution explorer and select properties. Both have their own configuration screens.
Library error seems like it is referencing something outside the project, maybe a .dll
Use the debug to narrow down what it could be.

It is the .NET framework, at least on this PC. If you get the error can not find dynamic library mscoree.dll, it is because you don't have the .NET frame work installed. It also happens to be a 23 meg download. You can get it through windows updates or this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

What a pain. If I would have realized this last night, I would have just done it in borland this morning at work. I apoligize to anyone on dial up (like myself) who would have to suffer through this if they wanted to use it.

I also realized the current indicators of what rotation the cube currently has is wrong, so don't really rely on them to figure out where the cube is currently pointed (at least when you have multiple rotations around different axis). I will look into it tonight, they probably have to be swapped with each other when a rotation happens. I didn't really think about it until now.

Ok.. We got some hints, but they don't make sense to me Sad

I did some more snooping around.. check this out..

http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/nisha
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/emile
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/hideko
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/cheat
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/demise
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/conspiratoria
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/forthcoming

All of these say "Finish It!" and only forthcoming takes you to the_future

I only tried half of the words we found so far randomly, so I assume there are more.

The question is, what to these words have in common? Maybe if we work it backwords we can find a pattern ..

My current spec is that the words follow each other, the last letter in each word being the first letter in the next. That would make sense if you find a word and it says "finish_it" so you go back and you find the next word.. although the only two words that follow that pattern are demisE-Emile..

Also, I couldn't find hideko in the wordlist, but it must be there for this theory to work.. oh by the way, four of those words apear on the same plane (demise, emile, conspiratoria, cheat)

New lead? New dead end? This is so frustrating..

I took helper's list of found words and made it into a list of links (attached). Then clicked each and every one of them. The ones that hit to the "finish it!" domain are:

http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/conspiratoria
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/emile
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/console
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/cheat
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/grief
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/muddle
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/demise
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/forger
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/expediency

EDIT: (added ones from above list)
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/nisha
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/hideko
http://www.virgilkingofcode.com/forthcoming

There are a lot of words that have and s on the end or are elsewise able to be shortened. I didn't shorten and check those. Maybe someone else wants to.

For anyone playing along casually, nhansard's words can be found in the cube as follows:

Code:

( 1, 5, 1) ( 0, 0, 1): nishapvreykdbinoyucr: nisha
(13,11, 4) ( 0, 1, 0): hidekoaljdcacafdhdch: hideko
(12, 4, 4) ( 0,19, 0): cheatoqcvtcedacartoq: cheat
( 3, 9, 3) ( 1, 0, 0): consolekrowretsamdih: console
(11,17,12) ( 1, 0, 0): muddleethwbtmtolivet: muddle
( 4, 7, 4) ( 1, 1, 0): conspiratoriacdutcbc: conspiratoria
(11,12,12) ( 1, 1, 0): demiserpweujdeceiver: demise
( 8, 9, 4) ( 1, 1, 0): emileeoicnpwiscrrprd: emile
( 1, 3, 0) ( 1, 1, 0): griefuateuafwbokeeac: grief
( 1, 3, 8) ( 1, 1, 1): forthcomingewlaflikc: forthcoming
( 3,14, 4) ( 1,19, 0): demisececqadaqcpwccy: demise
(17,19,11) (19, 0, 0): nishachroniclesmkekk: nisha
(10, 9, 2) (19, 1, 1): expediencyrzhaknrvap: expediency
(17,17, 1) (19,19, 0): forgermdefaultktoxbz: forger

As before, the first column is the first letter coordinates (row, col, page), each numbered from 0 to 19. The top left corner of the first page is (0,0,0).

Also, the second column is the step vector (row, column, page). A stepsize of 19 is effectively a stepsize of -1, due to wrapping. That is, stepping from (0,0,0) by (19,0,0) would collect characters at (0,0,0), then (19,0,0), (18,0,0), (17,0,0), etc.

Two of these words appear twice: nisha and demise. However, the second time for both maybe be part of a longer phrase: "Nisha Chronicles" and "Deceiver Demise[s]"(?). Other words are sprinkled on some on the other lines as well - most notably, "default" on the "forger" line.

It is possible to find these words at other places in the cube if you are willing to allow larger steps sizes. I hesitate to suggest that, because allowing all the possible step vectors increases the number of candidate to consider by more than 300 times, and I don't think it's useful. I only mention it at all because of a strange coincidence: I only find "virgil" one place in the cube:

( 6, 4, 9) (13, 9, 9): virgilicmrykqsmkhxiw: virgil

As I remember it (and I might remember wrong - I can't check right now), all the other "words" in the URLs you list - "www", "king", "of", "code", and "com" - can all be found in the cube using the small step vectors. Only "virgil" is missing. And, of course, "virgil" is the answer to the title of Mr. Tatum's last rant "Still the king".

By the way, I did go ahead and remapped the cube to put the virgil on the (1,1,1) step vector, and took a quick look at the results. There were, as always, many random words, but I saw nothing that stood out EXCEPT "virgil". As usual, I was filtering the candidates through a dictionary before I looked at them, so if there were any proper names except the ones that I put in the dictionary myself, I wouldn't have seen them.

That leads me to the reason I'm writing such a useless post. I have a question: who or what is "hideko"? I know the "word" is in the cube, but I didn't find it the first time, because it isn't a normal dictionary word, and I hadn't noticed it on Virgil's site. Did I miss something? In what context was "hideko" first mentioned (other than here)?

Thanks,
--helper (though not being very helpful)
