Anagram and thoughts

Taking the numerical equivalents of the words (based on length) and pulling out the nth letter for each in turn (first the 5th letter for "shake", then four more letters in for "face") I get "ietntcs". The vowel/consonant ratio seems promising, but the anagram engine and cryptogram helper found nothing useful (not surprising, as this ignores the saying, which seems important).

My other thought, the repetition of "which" in the saying is grammatically incorrect, I think (god, the wars that may start over that statement; english teachers only, please!), but I don't understand any significance yet.

If we are seeking only which is absent.. it could be the word "off". On wheel of fortune in australia they have a segment where you have to guess the missing word that is applied to all words on the screen. Off works with all of the words.

I guess 'off' would be somthing you could type into a keyboard if you wanted to turn something off?

I guess another option could be that we're looking at the word "sought" incorrectly. What if it's a homophone and is supposed to be read as "sort" instead? Sorting the words alphabetically gives

eye
face
fly
head
length
snake
work

I have no idea what it might mean, but thought someone might be able to run with it.

Having said all that, my favourite answer so far is still "sought".

[edit] Stupid...homophone, not homonym...

I think 'off' is one of the more likely options i've read so far, but i'm not so sure about 'eye off/off eye' or 'length off/off length'. They seem a bit flimsy. If i'm missing the connection, please illuminate.

I like the idea of typing 'off' to turn the lock off, kinda like the 'puzzle' puzzle.

I think the answer might be along the lines of a prefix which goes with all the words e.g.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"over" can prefix all of the words to make a proper english word:

(Definitions for rare words from from the Oxford English Dictionary).

overshake - To shake off or away; to dispel

overface - To abash, overcome, or overwhelm, esp. by effrontery or a display of confidence. In later use also: to intimidate, esp. by presenting too great a task or obstacle

overeye - To cast one's eye over; to observe, have an eye to; to watch over.

overwork

overlength

overhead

overfly

I emailed this to Violet, and got the usual autoreply.

I don't have anything useful to contribute, except: can we, maybe, pleeeez stop spoilering things that are not spoilers? Those would include: non-solutions, non-partial-solutions, non-giveaways, non-hints... just, basically, anything that is guesswork. With so many spoilers and nothing even closely resembling a solution this thread is a little... frustrating, I guees, to follow Dunno

Nope, it's fine to repeat the second 'which'!

I am thinking about Violet's comment that "I think my knowledge of ancient belief systems isn't quite up to the job..." Could this be a useful pointer that we are overlooking? After all, the quote from the Sayings of Gyvann sounds a bit like a Zen Buddhist koan. Any other ancient beliefs out there that might shed some light?

I did try and match the words up with the Eightfold path of Buddhism, thinking maybe there was one missing, but I couldn't really tie them all in very well. They are: right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

the quirky acuty stuff

Wow, I haven't posted for long.
Regarding the puzzle: dunno. Is it possible, that we will get further information on cards? Like the solution will lie on a puzzle card...

It was just a thought. Anyway, I have no idea what the solution could be.

Oh, and I mailed Violet that IMO they should use their f00 and h4x the thing open - like with a hardware keycatcher. Very Happy

That which is missing is The Cube. Which has seven letters. But trying to extract them from the seven words is tricky. Thought perhaps they might have one of the letters each and anagram to something, but can't make it work. Which suggests to me...wrong wrong wrong. Smile

I don't think that matters. Big ancient text...grab something appropriate for a key code. Vicars do it every morning with the Bible.

But I'm defending something that doesn't work! Smile (yet...I still have some affection for it and will try on the bus...really really late for work!)

I still feel we are overlooking something very simple. After all, somethimes the most obvious answer is disregarded as you expect it to be hard.

Quote:
It may be a prefix but there dont seem to be any that fit.

It may be the common vowel thing, but it seems too contrivertial.

The noun/vowel idea is wrong, as nothing is missing.

I also think that the words may not be an answer selection as wee are looking for something missing.

I recomend we simply look at the puzzle at a different angle, as a whole ans see what that throws up.

technically, we're looking for "that which is absent", so it depends on whether that's taken literally or not. Non-literally, it could be a word that's missing from the list, or a prefix, etc. Literally, it could mean "look for the word that is 'absent' in the list", and with only one of those words meaning the same thing as absent there'd be one answer to that version.

Just depends on what the question means, as always, there's more than one way of interpreting it, and that's the puzzle
