Was there ever *not* a scientist who didn't seek what was absent? (or, at least, not immediately apparent to the naked eye...?). If we start with Copernicus, we could be here all day Smile

I don't suspect that the Recons. would have much truck with the scientific world - view, anyhow.

There does seem to be an overall pun in place by which (remember) it is *only* that which is absent that must be sought, because the rest of the words are 'Gyvanns' (=Givens), but we've noted that already, and although it's clever, it doesn't tell us anything we didn't know anyway...

Grrrr!!!

Btw - must be sought... I thought it might be 'sort'... alphabetically / by length there's not an awful lot though.
If it helps Wink

Like I've said twice (and thanku DrPiranha for noticing) if it's a pun then the most obvious solution is 'fly' because you can use it to mean 'absent' as in 'left'

The Spider future, taken in that context, seems to me to be rather promising. If one thing leads to another, that Recon puzzle led to the futures... However, the Recons may not have done that intentionally, and Madame Bianca may know more than we're giving her credit for.

Also, about Scarlett's broadcast: What I picked up from that was not that there was a cult about Earth scientists, but it is more of a cult sensation to know all of the scientists' names--Just like some of us find it awesome to know the names and backgrounds of all the Greek gods, or like some of us find it awesome to go to a showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show completely cross-dressed. That kind of cult sensation, not like scary religion type cult.

I could be wrong though!

It think the instructions need to be read more carefully:

A really old fashioned puzzle-lock, with a keyboard for inputting a word and some text above as a riddle. Apparently it's supposed to give room for a few minutes reflection on "the words of Gyvann" before attempting to contact the outside world. I copied it down, but can't seem to get anywhere with it (I think my knowledge of ancient belief systems isn't quite up to the job...).

The clues I would say are:

• "a word" (not mulitple)
• ancient belief systems

What it means? I have no clue yet...

could this also refer to Violet writing

I can work with that chain of logic to some extent. 'Absent' as in 'I absent myself from the room' and 'fly' as in 'I fly my enemies', I assume. Pretty archaic usages, I'd say, but maybe that would fit a Reconstructionist mindset - so then, you're quite right: that [within the list of words] which is 'absent' must be sought = fly.

I think the presence of the rest of the list is very bizarre though, in that case - it's just a string of meaningless nulls - which it might well be...but you have to wonder...

And I don't know...the logic is maybe almost *too* convoluted, as 'absent' and 'fly' as synonyms aren't really *that* close in meaning; they both mean 'leave' in rather different ways - for a start, the speed at which the leave is being taken is rather distinct in each case...

But I agree - it at least presents us with a feasible password...

Surely Violet doesn't know the answer, that's why we're trying to do the puzzle too, so how would she be able to give us a clue to something she has no clue about? I really think it's just a typo, we all make them

I don't believe this is solveable until Violet gives us another riddle so we can try and work out some ground rules.
She did say it may change "in a few days"
With another set of words something may become more obvious (hopefully)

Spiderwork works

According to Google, people use it quite naturally when writing

http://www.google.com/search?q=spiderwork

It means a mesh of interconnecting things.

Does anyone have the full Oxford English dictionary?

I like the FISH answer...it's works too well to be a coincidence.
