[OT] Stupid Treo Tricks

This is a different subject then getting a branded Treo unlocked.

These things are great for communicating in a variety of ways, and it's possible that they will have an impact on our ARG'ing efforts well after Heist is over. So this thread is about ticks to make your smartphone smarter from an ARG standpoint.

The Treo 650 can use 8 bit mono .wav files as a ringtone, you can find the directions here (it says the directions are for the Sprint variant of the phone, but the directions worked fine on my unbranded model); there is also an option to use a voice recorder to make a custom ringtone on the spot by just talking into your phone. In this way you can create a unique but innocuous sounding ring so that the "uninitiated" don't necessarily know you're getting a call or text.

I believe it was Diandra who suggests Kinoma for viewing mpeg4 files on your smartphone (and PSP actually, very exciting). This would have come in handy when worry sent me that movie of the goons... If only I had an unlocked phone I could actually use at the time. Smile I haven't had time to try it out quite frankly, but everybody else with a Treo on the Internet seems to love it. Smile

Okay, that was my last break before I go back to cramming for the GMAT, which I take Monday morning.

Add your finds and thoughts in the meantime.

Well... as far as ARGs go with that nifty 'Make your own ringtone' thing... you could record things in other ARGs... like pay phone clues and other such voiced clues as a ringtone file and then play it back to yourself hundreds of times over... if you want...

There's also several IRC Clients that'll run on the treo.

I'll be trying one out in the next few days..

The best way to avoid taking up all your memory with apps you don't use is to not install a bunch of crap in the first place...

For the rest of us there's this free thing. It only uninstalls apps mind you.

The best Treo E-Mail program Chatter

It's an IMAP E-Mail client that works like a Blackberry. It somehow checks your inbox in real time. Way better than Versamail.

I found a website that details a way to enable the bluetooth DUN on treos. It's disabled on any carrier-branded phone at the carrier's insistence Sad

I haven't tried this yet, but I will.. and I'll report back!
