More about "½ (1 + √5) ":

Math geekery unite! Besides being "phi", 1.618... is also the Golden Ratio of mathematics. As mentioned before, it is the ratio between the Fibonacci numbers.

However, it also appears tons of other places. Spirals (pinecones and sunflowers), the infamous rabbit multiplication propblem. It also accounts for a lot of aesthetics and human proportions. Golden rectangles (rectangles in the golden ratio) are said to be the most visually pleasing form, and account for many ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Roman-type structures. The ratio of your finger's first joint to the second is the golden ratio also.

Quote:
Many books claim that if you draw a rectangle around the face of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, the ratio of the height to width of that rectangle is equal to the Golden Ratio. No documentation exists to indicate that Leonardo consciously used the Golden Ratio in the Mona Lisa's composition, nor to where precisely the rectangle should be drawn. Nevertheless, one has to acknowledge the fact that Leonardo was a close personal friend of Luca Pacioli, who published a three-volume treatise on the Golden Ratio in 1509

Isn't the whole point of the Vituvian man stuff to do with the Golden ratio?

I believe so. It is said the extremities of the human body as well as the torso have proportions equal or near to phi.

Unfortunately, due to the dark trenches of copyright law and the rising trend of suing for anything and everything, creating an ARG based on this would be limited to the decision of marketing types who don't understand how much it would benefit them.

Wouldn't it be nice to just sit down and say "Hey, let's make an ARG based on this", without having to beg the corporate overlords for their blessings?

Are you kidding? Did you see what happened with ilovebees.com?

Believe me, the corporate/marketing world sat up and took notice. I was at a IGDA event recently where 4orty 2wo talked about their work on ILB and The Beast, and they had some really hot stuff to say. Also, it sounded like the corporate half of the room was VERY impressed. I wouldn't be surprised to see more and more of these being used as promotional tools in the very near future.

That's some pretty bad CG. But I'm interested. Has anyone taken a crack at it yet?

There is a contact link on Langdon's page. Sent an email and got an automated response back.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Thank you for writing. I apologize for this automated
response, but I am currently in Florence attempting
to locate the key to "The Prophecy" - an encoded
parchment that may have been written by Leonardo Da
Vinci. I will respond to your message upon my return.

Sincerely,

Robert Langdon

Jonas,

If this is you, DON'T erase this email - I can only
send it once. Something terrible has happened. I was
attacked outside my hotel, and the parchment was
stolen! I think the thieves intend to auction it on-
line. I don't have reliable web access here, and I
need your help. You must find this auction
immediately and track down the parchment. Here are
the two best art-related auction sites:

http://www.auctionport.com
http://www.relic-bay.com

When you search, you should definitely include the
initials "LSPDV" because they are so rare. Please do
everything in your power to locate the parchment
soon - I must get it back. I'm getting very close to
uncovering the key to the code.

- Robert

EDIT: *snip*

go to the relic bay link and search "lspdv".
someone bought it already.
she says she used the bank advertised on the site to store it.
go to the site and log in with her name. theres a clue she left about her login code. but it relates to the book, and i have not read it.

She keeps the parchment at the Depository Bank of Zurich which has a link at the bottom of the relic-bay website. Go there, enter her name and code (they tell you how to find the code). Apparently the parchment has been returned and there is a phone number to call. Anybody want to make a call?

EDIT: The code if you need it:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1123581321 The first eight numbers of Fibonacci's sequence.

I think this is covered once in News & Rumors and once in Timewasters?

I thought this sounded familiar but I searched for it and couldn't find it. I think I've had my fill of trout for this evening.
