Quote:
Hi,

It's me. Or at least I think it's me. I don't feel possesed at the
moment. Yes that's right possessed. Its seems that the spirits here
are more potent than first thought.

I just wanted you to know, that I'm going to get rid of the Tall Man.
I don't know how yet. But I know there's a way to do it. How do I
know? I wish I could tell you. Its just 'there' on the tip of my
tongue so to speak. But I'll find it, and soon.

Anything might happen between now, and then. Maybe this'll be the last
emai you get from me. I hope not. I just wanted to thank you all for
your help. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't even understand what was
going on around me.

Thank you so much.

Layla

Here's the image (converted from .bmp to .jpg):

Also, here's some thoughts on where to go or where not to go with this one, since I can't get into the chat room from my current undisclosed location... Not a solve, but spoilerized nonetheless.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Alright, just in case someone wants it, the characters are:

202 212 120
opaignotszoslarhrtuo
202 22 201
fgwvloqebnueasondiid
11 12 1
erjufghlwnodpashiaca

Three sets of 20 characters, the first and third connected by the letter "e" and the last two connected by the letter "d"... The letters "d" and "e" only appear in the second two boxes... A simple ROT doesn't seem to do the trick. The numbers could be some kind of base 2 conversion... From base 2 to base 10, the rows of numbers make 3032, 1529, and 133... Not sure that leads anywhere... I'll edit/update if I come up with more.

As for what I've found -

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Ok, if you take the numbers and make them into trinary (adding 0s to the front of the numbers that are not 3 digits), you get
Box 1 - 20 23 15 = T W O
Box 2 - 4 5 1 = D E A
Box 3 - 20 8 19 = T H S

Which comes out as, of course, "Two Deaths"

More later...

Oh, good catch! It's not a .htm so could that be a steg password? I don't have that software on this PC...

could the "e" and "d" be a kind of bridge? I was thinking about what the numbers mean, and Eric and Richard... Ack, I can't work on this one any more. Gotta work.

/me pukes.

ilikepucks from IRC discovered the following:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Taking every fourth letter from the text in the three squares and then adding "ed", the phrase "it should have ended" is formed. This leads us to http://www.freewebs.com/morganparanormal/itshouldhaveended.htm

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The vignere key "twodeaths" gives us the following output when the text on itshouldhaveended.htm is inputted:

I already knew that he'd escaped. It was on the front page of the morning news, albeit not the main article. I suppose I was waiting for him, there is my tower with my runes, and demons and bottled enchantments; I felt a hundred times my age. I only looked twice it, with the silver streaks in my hair, and frown lines that had developed in my perpetual concentration.

It was only natural that this would be the last confrontation between the three of us. Things were finally drawing to a close. To be honest, I was tired of it. To be done with all this sordid business would be nothing less than a blessing.

I knew he was there before I heard him. I felt him, my twin, home at last. With him, I also sensed the malignant presence that was his 'constant companion', however, now, something was different. Part of that malignancy was actually within Richard himself, gnawing away and the corners of his soul, nearly infecting it to the core.

I turned around to watch him ascend his way into my Tower. He was gaunt, and the loose hair that fell around his face was lank, and he was oh some much older for all the years we'd spent apart. And finally, the glint of madness overshadowed his eyes. I could see no pupil.

"Do you know what we're here to do boy?" I heard the Tall Man's voice before I saw him, but this time I saw him completely. With fair glittering skin, and piercing violet eyes.

I removed my reading glasses and set them on the desk. "You're here to kill me, I imagine."

He clapped. "Ah, splendid. You'll go along quietly then?"

The wind blow so cold before the battle's begun. I took a breath.

"I didn't say that!" in a fluid motion I grabbed the silver rapier, it's blade covered in runes, and leapt at the demon. One handed swordplay, I had learned it in hopes of piercing that demon with my enchanted blade.

He laughed, and stepped easily away from my swing, but I turned and swung again. Now the demon held a sword as well, black as pitch and manifested from his evil energy. We crossed blades, there in that tiny attic, the one and only time I danced with that demon, in a whirl of anger.

He knew I would soon tire, I knew it too. But every time I looked at my brother, that limp puppet, I was suffused with new energy. Give me the strength…to destroy this monster! But it was hopeless, even I, the great magician of Rookery Tower, was no match for this fiend.

My breathing was hard and ragged, my footwork less than graceful.

"Little boy," Xazlael chuckled. "Why do you fight so hard? Why won't you just give up?"

"Because I believe in my brother! I believe in his pure soul!"

That catlike smile played on his face. "Do you?" he broke off his advance, and snapped his fingers. "Wake up Richard."

I saw consciousness, if not sanity, return to my brother's face. "Xazlael?"

I clenched my fists.

As I suspected he would, the demon turned to hand my brother his sword. Though his back was turned, I attacked. No mercy, no honor, for a demon!

But something stopped me. A magick barrier.

"Ah ah ah," the demon scolded, wagging his finger at me. "That isn't very nice."

I snarled.

The Tall Man patted my brother on the back. "Will you finish him for me, my boy?'

Richard nodded. "Cof ourse. This will fe bun."

He grasped the dark blade, and I was at a disadvantage again, Xazlael had granted him a second hand.

I felt the barrier released, and my own brother rushed forward to attack me. He was as good as I was, and I knew it wasn't all the demon's power. Richard had been on the fencing team at his school, all those years ago.

Richard was stronger than me, and more brutal. His attacks held a terrible fury, and his face possessed a mad grin. He was pushing me back into a corner. Our swords caught, and he tried to force me down.

The strength in my poor arm was failing, but, suddenly, Richard released his grip and I began to pitch forward. He shoved me, and I toppled to the floor, my sword spinning across the room, where the Tall Man picked it up.

Richard looked down. "Pitiful," he said as he kicked me in the ribs. He lowered his sword edge to my throat. He was going to kill me.

I winced.

"Broodbye Gother," he said without a trace of regret.

I coughed. Blood. "Is that to be it then? You kill me, and run away to fairyland?" I held up my hands, finally beaten. "That's what you want. Do it! Do it!" I grabbed the blade, and it cut into my palm. "End it Richard!"

I looked up. His eyes….

He nodded, and lifted his blade to finish me. He looked back at the Tall Man, who nodded.

"Eric…" he whispered.

I watched in horror, and so did Xazlael, as Richard turned the blade from my throat, and plunged it into his own body.

Blood spilled on my face, and he collapsed on the floor beside me.

The Tall Man howled. He'd been using my brother as an anchor to enter the Tower despite my wards, and now…The Tall Man's presence in the room began to weaken.

"Eric," my brother whispered painfully.

I sat up, and looked at him. I could feel the tears brimming in my eyes. My brother, my brother was going to die! I touched his face gently. "Shhh, it'll be okay," I lied, even as my tears fell on his wound. Would that life were a fairy tale, and my grief might heal them. Would that it banish that demon who haunted us.

But life is not that way.

"Eric… I'm sorry."

And then he breathed his last.

I cried over his body for quite some time, and prayed that he be judged by a lenient god. Then I put my papers in order, and fetched the rope.

It should have ended that day, with the death of we two brothers. But the poison in Richard's spirit was too strong. It bound him to this earth, and I in turn was bound to him. It seemed our pain would never end.

Well, good to know I helped a tiny bit... any reasoning behind those particular letter choices?

I guess from the e-mail we recieved, the ROT said "cornerssides" and there is four corners, and four sides..so every forth letter is reasonable.

Ah, didn't know about any emails apart from the one posted at the start of the thread. Due to constraints regarding work and email, I can't really involve myself in that side of these games (which is becoming more and more of a problem, unfortunately).
