[HALO] Halo movie closer to reality

(I posted on the script discussion thread, but this probably deserves it's own thread)

As posted on The Hollywood Reporter

Quote:
Fox, Uni game for 'Halo' film

20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures are teaming up to make a feature film adaptation of the Microsoft video game "Halo." Negotiations still were under way at press time Thursday, but under the deal, Universal will take domestic rights and Fox will handle international on the project. Further components could be included in the agreement. The deal -- based on a script by "28 Days Later" scribe Alex Garland -- caused a stir earlier in the week when CAA sent it out via a messenger clad in a "Halo"-esque green costume. The deal came bearing some pretty stiff terms, including a two-hour bidding period and demands for $10 million against 15% of the gross. The script was commissioned by Microsoft, which also brought in producer Peter Schlessel to work on the project. (Liza Foreman and John Gaudiosi)

Nice! Now, who's gonna be the director?? And will it be ready on time for Halo3?

It makes sense. HALO will never be worth more than it is right now, and they know it. We may get a quality movie as opposed to when a good game gets passed for 10 years and gets picked up by a budget-minded hack director and a worthless scriptwriter.

yeah, i like MS's approach here, selling Halo as a "turn key" franchise. basically, they've done all the ground work, the studio just has to hand over the money and get it started.

having a series bible set by Bungie is great, it will assure that the Covies are still the Covies and Master Chief will still wear Mjolnar Armor. i can only imagine what a Halo movie would be like without this involvment...... (cue wavy lines and 'diddly-doot' sound effects)

Master Chief wouldn't wear a helmet, so we could all see that he was played by Vin Diesel

a perfectly good strong female lead like Miranda Keyes would be thrown out for some contrived love interest damsel-in-distress played by whatever Bimbette-of-the-month is currently hawt

Cortanna would be oversexed (probably nude for no good reason, other than to copy X-Men) and crank out tons of horrible catch phrases (not that "Betcha can't stick it!" is comic genius, but expect much worse)

Sgt Johnson? oh, the black curmugeon mentor character? yeah, dead. dead dead dead. he's got everything against him as far as Hollywood scriptwriters are concerned, he wouldn't last past the first hour, gotta have that pathos ya know:
"*cough* no no.. leave me... *wheeze* i'll jes slow ya down... *cough* you... remember what i taught ya.... i believe in ya... you don't need me no more.... *cough* you go get 'em Masta Chief.... uuuuugh "(dies)

The Covenant probably wouldn't even be there, or they wouldn't make much involvment. Hollywood loves the formula, and that formula is "Aliens" (1986). so expect more emphasis on the Flood, just 90 minutes of mindless Flood killin'! political/religious intrigue? booo-ring! more zombie monsters!

343 Guilty Spark, instead an arrogant little SOB, we'd get some wise-crackin hyperactive thing voiced by either Robin Williams or Billy Crystal. ugh

MC would be supported by a cast of young marines right out of the academy, played by Johnny Knoxville, Seth Greene, Lindsay Lohan, and at least one kid from "that 70's show"

wow, horrible what our friends on Earth-2 are going to be watching... poor bastards.......

Or how about the Drill Sgt from Forrest Gump? Sure he's not BMF, but he talks the talk. I'd like to see Michael Beihn (sp?) reprising the Hicks role as a kick-a$$ marine.

The Master Chief should be as close to the game's as possible, he shouldn't ever show his face, and he should be played by the same voice actor as in the games. And his lines should be just as short.

Here's an idea... how about the first FPM (First Person Movie)! All seen from the Master Chief's POV!!!

OK, maybe not... but a few first person shots that tie into an after-next gen Halo 5 would be awesome. try to recreate some of the excitement from the game.

Squeeee! Let the fanboydom begin!

I'm really hoping there isn't any major character development. The movie should be action and cinematography first, IMHO. A good director, good script, and new ground to cover. I don't want a rehashing of the games (and they don't really need to retell the story to pick up in the middle..."we're at war with aliens who hate us, pick up the games to learn more" would work just fine for most viewers), since I doubt it would be much better than the game. I want to see the canon of the universe get developed on-screen, not learn why John117 is driven to keep mankind from being anhilliated.

In fact, I hope there isn't big name actors in the movie. The most important part is going to be the direction. I don't imagine they'll get the best of directors for the project, but there is plenty of room for game-like cinematics. A-list actors would possibly add the baggage of folk's expectations to the movie.

Halo has an immersive universe with a protagonist that is pretty much faceless. The lack of developed hero makes it very easy to put yourself into his shoes. I think the movie could do the same. Let's face it, people want to identify with the hero, and MC is the best thing for that. His under-developed personality lets you picture yourself as him. Almost every story that has a widely-admired hero exists because you can imagine yourself as the hero and fall in love with being him.

My wife puts it this way about the third graders she teaches, "They are at that age where they pretty much know how the world works, that mom and dad are the tooth fairy and santa, and that they have no super powers. But they also hold out a secret hope that this isn't really how the world works--one day a courtesan will come along to inform them that there was a mixup at birth and he/she is really a prince/princess, or one day they will realize that they can fly." I don't think we get past that point in third grade, which is why Halo satisfies. It's why Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter and most biblical figures, Jo March (little women) and Little Orphan Annie are so popular. Characters can be developed after they've swept you off of your feet.

MC is like a blank template; easy to picture yourself in his place, and you know he has a developed personality that just hasn't been devulged yet. A lot like vader...you knew that kid was a badass, but you didn't need to know exactly why to believe it. Anakin's backstory was just gravy, but wouldn't have been very compelling without having eps. 4-6 to make me care in the first place.

I agree that direction is most important. But seeing how Vader has been dragged down by God-awful acting, I'd love some good actors on secondary roles. I don't want a big name for MC, since I'm hoping he spends the whole movie inside the suit.

That would be cool! If they can copy some of the marine style from Aliens, I'd be happy!

I want David Cross and Orlando Jones to come back as marines. They were the best part of H2, IMHO.

Orlando Jones was the best part of Drumline; in fact, he was better than every part of the rest of that film. I could see him as Sarge, but the go-to guy on this one is Jules Winnfield. If he could take hostage a few of the Covvie leadership, it'd just be gravy.

Master Chief needs to be a big guy who can move, and the suits all that matters visually. The thing is, I just can't see him as being the lead character, because as has been said there's nothing to the guy. It would be better to have the characters around him carry more of the plot, just not in a way that seems blatantly explanatory.

I dont know. I'm probably the last guy who's going to get excited by this announcement.

If Hollywood wants a movie where MC takes his helmet off (and thus captilizes on a "star")... that's easy. It's called The Fall of Reach.

Yeah, but...I don't know, there are a lot of instances where Master Chief goes without a helmet, or even without the armor, in all of the books. I sort of think it's humorous that Halo 2 opens with this "omg no helmet but you can't seeeee" moment.
