Virtual Magic Kingdom

Players and Disney dorks take heed: this is disgustingly addictive.

It's a free online rpg-type-thing, where you are a guest at a virtual Disneyland made up of bits and pieces from all the Disney parks.

As expected, the background music and visuals are great. NPC characters are quite well animated, and make extraordinarily bad puns. You create your own character appearance from a surprisingly large choice of body and clothing types.

There are quests, including a hunt for 50 -very well hidden- mickeys, for pins that allow you do use magic, and for pins commemorating accomplishments in the various minigames found throughout the park.

Speaking of the minigames:

There is a Music Game in which you can make music and then play it for other people, who can dance to it.

There is a Pirates of the Carribean game in which teams of four battle in pirate ships on the high seas.

There is a Fireworks game in which you can compete with 10 to 100 people at a time to create the best fireworks show.

There is a Jungle Cruise game in which you drive a boat down the jungle river and snap photos of jungle critters for points.

You can get credits for doing various things around the park, and you can use those credits to buy pins, clothing, posters, and furniture. You can also buy rooms to put your stuff in, and people can visit your rooms and you can create your own games and things in them.

If you go to the actual Disney parks, you can get special exlusive stuff at the VMK kiosks that have just opened today. Also at the parks are live quests, triva challenges and scavenger hunts and stuff like that, with more special VMK stuff as rewards.

Note that the game is in Beta, and has several bugs that need to be worked out, plus some locations are still in development. There are a LOT more features coming out pretty soon.

WARNING: There is one -extremely- frustrating issue:
the live chat system only allows words in the VMK dictionary. This is a security feature of great controversy, as it is a tiny dictionary and does not allow ANY number words (to avoid kids giving out their numbers or addresses), and lots of words associated with sexual innuendo are also absent (some of the more ubiquitous words that probably shouldn't have been removed are "hard" and "hand").

Originally, people used homonyms to get around this (tree for three, won for one), but some of the mods removed thsoe words from the dictionary. As you can imagine, this limits the vocabulary somewhat.

It's especially hard to describe the location of the hidden mickeys which are in trees. Common phrases to get around this include "tall stick" "big plant" "forest thing" "green nature stick", etc.

Other than that, this is a brilliant little piece of marketing that will probably suck up all of your time.

I visited the Virtual Magic Kingdom late last month and discovered some handy subversive phrases. Here's the list if you're interested in spicing up the happiest place in the virtual world.
