[UPDATE]: Sentinel June 14th Holiday Sombre for Pious

Quote:
Holiday Sombre for Pious
By CORINNE HATHAWAY
Despite bustling retail activity and an overall feeling of relief at the arrival of summer, the upcoming holiday will be marked by sombre reflection and meditation by some of the more religious groups in the city. "Of course Solstice is supposed to be a joyous time ... but under the circumstances, we only have the enthusiasm for a muted celebration," said Sister Golda Flynnt of the Brotherhood of the Six.

The reason for this subdued mood: The still-missing Receda Cube, stolen from the Academy nearly a year and a half ago. Flynnt explained, "Our typical celebrations obviously revolve around meditating upon the properties of the Cube and communing with its essence. ... I would not call our current situation a metaphysical crisis, no, but it is certainly more difficult to try to commune with an object you know has somehow slipped into another world."
Even some less observant citizens told the Sentinel they are planning on downplaying the holiday this year. "All of the holidays, they're all about gifts and parties now," said 67-year-old Hunter Jurgensen. "Well, pish to that. I'm doing the Gambol with my grandkids and relying on traditional games and fun. Family, that's what the holidays are about."

Nonetheless, the majority of the city seems to be forging on through the holidays without giving the Cube a second thought. Even the annual Cube Hunt on the Academy grounds, considered by many to be a too-macabre reminder of the events surrounding the Cube's mysterious disappearance, has been reinstated this year. "Children don't understand that the hunt could be seen as some kind of terrible joke," said Academy representative Valerian Reynolds. "They just see the hunt in their books and remember it from past year, or hear about it from older children, and they want to play too. ... It may be a little painful for adults, but it would be unfair to the children to continue to cancel it."

As for Sister Flynnt, even she agreed, with a sigh, that the city must go on, with the Cube or without it. "That doesn't mean I'll have the same joy in my heart as years past, mind you," she warned.

Corolla Retrial Up in Air

The city is delaying its efforts to reschedule Michael Corolla's murder trial while it investigates emerging evidence that Corolla may have been set up. "It looks like a juror was being paid to convict him," said Corolla's legal representative, Johann Jacobson. "Nobody does something like that without a big motive, and we're going to find out what that motive is."

Well, clear as mud, as always! The Brotherhood of Six are starting to be referenced rather more often of late. We know that there is a Perplexian religion called Cubism, from which Reconstructionism appears to be a breakway group. I think it remains uncertain as to whether the Brotherhood of Six are *the* Orthodox Cubist Church, or only *an* Orthodox Cubist Church, but clearly, their standing in Perplexian society is higher than that of the Recons (not difficult, perhaps). It's intriguing that the two religious groups appear ostensibly to have so much in common - the Brothehood commune with the Cube, just as the Recons appear to; they have a system in which individuals are embraced fraternally as 'brother' and 'sister' etc. I think it was Violet who told us originally there was a split in the Church at some point, and the Recons are, in effect, a sectarian offshoot of the main Brotherhood body. What significance the number six has to them, I'm not sure. Presumably, it's a reference to six original founders (I think Violet may have mentioned that too), but why six? Is there some kind of sacred significance to the number? I suppose, logically, a cube has six sides, so maybe that's why.

As to the Corolla trial, it's been bubbling under for some time now, without yet bursting into significance. Anything that hints at a 'big motive' sounds as if might become significant to me. Somebody wants Corolla out of the way. Does he know something he shouldn't? Was he involved in something he shouldn't have been? As far as we knew, up to now, this case was a domestic one. But maybe it has wider reprecussions...

Straws in the wind, perhaps...

I assumed it related to the six faces of a cube. Note that the Recon file had a cube with Roman numerals on the sides that we could see.

Here's everything violet said about the brotherhood of the six:

So, how it works is that there's one "Brotherhood of the Six" to which a few different groups claim they are the legitimate successors.

fFrom that, the assumption was made they died out. poor assumption. on the other hand, making an occassional poor assumption may garner us some greater clarification on some points, such as this.

Ok, so i'm trying to liken the 6 to some earthly cult where there is another cult or many cults claiming to be the "successor". Oh, i know, wait, maybe it's like the 6 are Jewish. then everyone else is like the christians. see cos the jews had a culture, then something happened, and a bunch of people claimed the thing they were waiting fFor had happened and became christians. So maybe the 6 are like that. they believe something /will/ happen. everyone else believes it already /did/ happen and broke off to their own way.

sound about right?

I'm going to write the wiki fFrom the stance of neither schism, but lump them all under "Cubists" fFor now.
