[Halo 2] Elongation

nother design element that had to be addressed were the ladders originally found in Longest. You'll notice that in Elongation there are no ladders. Instead, a series of ramps have been added to provide a smoother flow.

No ladders??? AGAIN? What is -wrong- with these people?

Ladders are a pain in the ass. It's true. They also, in Longest, provided you with quick access to the shotgun at the price of being very, very vulnerable on the way up. That's what I -liked- about this map (among many things), and -again- they look at it as a flaw.

The same goes with ol' battle creek, the ramps make it too EASY.

I recall only one place in the single player campaign that they used a ladder - to get the rocket launcher on outskirts (the beach section). I think ladders are one of the things that make or break a level. Yeah, they provide quick access to something, but at the price of extreme vulnerability. It's a matter of balancing these things. If Bungie couldn't find a balance they liked with the new weapons, then it's understandable that they took it out. The PP/BR combo is just too strong in that situation I guess.
Don't knock it 'til you've played it.

Ladders are incredibly painful on XBL with the tiniest bit of lag.

I think, overall, it's a very smart move to get rid of them.

That would explain why I'm not averse to them... I still don't have XBL yet. But I'm working on correcting this situation ASAP.

Excellent point, Krystyn. I don't recall being lagged on a ladder, so it hasn't been such a problem for me.

Still, I wish there was -something- to slow down/further expose a person on those ramps, such as a narrower ledge or perhaps a couple of cargo boxes or another obstruction.

Also, and unrelated to Elongation:
I do like the subtlety of having weapons on the ground that can be ignored, but some use of the co-op style delivery would be cool. If effect, the covenant box or the human "resupply pods" could be around for select weapons or locations. The gameplay upshot is that those weapons, while more visible, can only be acquired from the side they're on.

What do you think?

Well, they did go on at length about the amount of boxes there were on that map, and how, even though you could use them as masking/shielding, they could certainly be a serious impediment, and could push you into an abyss despite your best efforts to avoid them ...
