You should totally get some R-type shoulder pads and a spoiler! Ooh, and some gold spinners, and a custom paintjob that says "Thug life"

It is. It really, really is.

Tonight after all but four left, we played a team training game. I had a really crappy day, and lemme tell ya, a game like http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStats.aspx?panel=stats&gameid=206563296&player=DanteThePoet]this can really make some one's night. I only hit 78 shots, and still I had 34 kills, that's barely two shots a head. I didn't even have the sword for very long!!! That, is one of my most memorable games, especially because I was in stitches thanks to sizables random monologue throughout the game. It was hilarious!

Holy cow, I tied one on that night... I just remember seeing you suck up all the kills... whilst I sucked down plenty of rum.

XBox repair

OK, guys, I need your help.

So, I've got this old XBox, right? The one that used to fail to load maps, and I'd have to power-cycle the damned thing and make you all wait in the lobby for me to get invited back in before we could go do matchmaking and custom games? Remember those days?

/me sighs fondly.

Yeah. See, I really miss my brother, who moved to Houston, TX earlier this year, and I was thinking that it might be really fun to give him this old XBox, and maybe purchase ummm, you know, Halo 2, and then ummmm, get him an XBoxLive subscription with the headset ...

but I'd like to, ostensibly, fix this Box before I give it to him. He's informed me that he's coming into Chicago again over the Independence Day weekend. It would be ideal to hand it to him personally, so he can just lug it with him on the return flight, you know?

What would it take for me to make this thing load maps properly and stuff? How much will this cost me? I gotta book my ticket still for ARGfest, so I don't have a lotta spare cash, but some people were bandying about pretty decent numbers once in a game lobby, so I am curious.

Is this a repair I can do myself? I've got some experience with RAM and video cards and stuff for pcs, so if it's on the order of that, I am up for it.

Advice?

(I might copy this into a new thread, but I dunno, I wanna keep it sorta hush-hush, even though I am sure he doesn't even know this site exists ...)

Have you tried some simple things first?
-cleaning the dvd head
-blowing out the xbox (compressed air)

If those don't work then things get more complicated. I started having problems with mine a while ago, and a $5 DVD head cleaner saved the day for me.

Ok, so I had the same trouble you are professing right now. Clean the sensor like Weephun said with one of those cleaning discs. If that doesn't work, got to xbox-scene.com check out the tuts, find one of the dvd drives that are compatable with the xbox, go pick it up from your local best buy, and then just put it in like you'd put in a dvd drive, or hard drive or video card into a reggy computer. They hsould have a list of everything compatable, plus instrustions on how to open your xbox and all that stuffage. Need help, just tell me, I modded the last one I had, so I can handle most problems in the xbox.

I think it's well accepted that the problem with the loading maps is the crappy Thomson DVD drive. Cleaning will help, but I don't think it'll solve the problem. You can try to adapt a PC drive, like someone suggested, or buy another Xbox drive on ebay or something like that. Samsung is the prefered brand, but it's pretty expensive! Philips should be fine as well and certainly cheaper. I have a Philips on mine and never had a failed map.

I replaced my drive and haven't had a single problem since. I had a Thomson, and now have a Phillips.

I picked up the new one for about $60 on eBay, then it was a 5-10 minute swap job. You'll need a special set of Torx screwdrivers too, the star shaped ones. That should only be another $5 or so. If you've got any experience at all with PC hardware stuff you should be fine - I was amazed just how much my Xbox looks like a PC inside.

I know, funny thing is, I starting parting on my xbox the same time I really started fooling with Pc's so I'm all like, well If I can do this, I can do that. Made modding my xbox and saving it from near death a few times, much easier. Everything easier when you undertsand that the only difference between an xbox and a pc is the motherboard and the operating system.

Tip 1: I'll speak for RoboGriff, since he's too good for us, now. He was having trouble with his Xbox, too. Before he tried to replace the optical drive, I convinced him to try to clean it first, using instructions from this site:

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/

It worked like a charm; his XBox loaded everything again.

Tip 2: The games you use heavily get dirty. Use a drop of dish detergent and a bit of warm water on the bottom (never on the top) of the disc. Rub it gently with your fingertips. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. I used this technique to get an unreadable Halo disc to work again.

i feel kinda naive
what does the xbox look like with the new drive, do you replace the fascia too, or do you now have a big ol' pc drive jutting out the front of the console?

Yep. Another good xbox site! Together with xbox-scene, you have everything you need. I think you can buy a drive at llamma.

Yeah. I have to open my xbox all the time, just because I switch hard drives to go on Live. Seeing an IDE cable there for the first time is pretty funny.

The replacement I bought had the faceplate and everything pre-installed, so it fit in perfectly.
