[META] Meet-Up London 2005

Been toying with this idea for a while.

As far as i'm aware, there hasn't been a big meet-up since Abbey Road, so let's have another.

Erm. Why?

Just another excuse to get pissed? No not really, basically, it's just a meet-up to encourage more people to come, and if those Underground puzzles are set up, we can attempt to decipher them.

Okay. When?

Not a clue to be honest. Since everyone is on holiday during August (No uni, no school) I thought August would be a better bet, however, I'm open to better ideas

What to do....
Apart from getting pissed (no, not really) I was thinking we could explore the major parts of London that have stuff to do with PPC, for example we could

Go to the pub nearest/in to Taversen Square for lunch
Go to PlayLounge (wherever the hell it is) and collaborate on the puzzles
Have a few hours in Hyde Park just having fun
Go to a cinema at night. Or get pissed. Yes

However, I'm open for suggestions

If it goes ahead, where to meet
I suggest outside a major Train station, like Victoria or St Pancras/Waterloo. Again, I'm open for suggestions

If you're under 16, I suggest you stay with a group

So, what do you think then?

[EDIT: moved to Meta, tagged. yanka.]

Can I post a small IN?

As I don't live in London, I'm up for going but would be dependent on date/ workload.

But yes, in principle sounds good.

As for beers, so long as it's just the one, count me in.

Oh and under 16s?
I'm not a responsible adult so would suggest this is 18+ event. If only so we can get into the pub without having to sit people outside with pop and crisps Very Happy

Sounds like a good idea.
Mine will have to be a small IN to, as it will depend on whether I can travel down to London on the chosen date.

Jay was not suggesting you were not responsible, just that I am not!

Sorry! Wink

Well, it should be a sunny day and it won't take that much more effort to find a place that the under 18s can go to too, and we'll all just sit outside. Though under 16s should probably be discouraged unless they have an elder person to take responsibility for them.

I mean, there's only so much you can do after 8 or 9pm anyway, in which case the younger contingent can make their merry way home ad the boozers among us (me included) can enjoy ourselves into the wee hours.

Not that I'm coming ; )

*joke*

I think this would be a really nice idea if we can encourage enough players to come, especially (if possible) those who are most prominent on the actual forums - that's not only because it's always interesting to meet face to face, but actually exchanging meaningful information face to face takes things to another level!

With this said, some reservations:

1. Obviously, London isn't a bad place for a fair amount of players to get to - but for those who work full - time (and I figure there must be a few of us), it may be awkward to meet up on a week - day, even in August. If the field remains open, suggesting a week - end is probably the best bet.

2. I think a discussion like this can go round and round in circles endlessly, with everyone approximately saying they might come if it's convienient etc. Although it's a bit of a pig to set up initially, the best option is probably to fit on a preliminary date, and then see how people are fixed. Many will still hedge, but we may inch forward gradually to a consensus if we have something firm to work with - just in the same way that, if we know an IG event is happening on a certain date, we can either make ourselves available for it or we can't. If there is no fixed date to start with, no one can really commit to anything, unless they can literally drop their entire life right off the bat.

3. Age groupings is an interesting topic - I have no idea how many of the forum posters are of school age - the impression I got generally was that most of the prominent posters have been to university already (a few several times round!), and that some of us are older than that. I think the age range spread may be fairly wide - although, admitedly, maybe it's a younger contingent that turns up for the meets.

I don't know how many people would be prepared to reveal how old they are on line, but I don't think there's any reason why the puzzle solving doesn't appeal right across an age range. For what it's worth, I'm 27!

In!

I concur the sooner we pin down a date, the better.

Well, i set up a few dates. they're all weekends, so as soon as the pool ends, I'll change the poll so that we can choose a certain day

Sounds like a cunning plan....unfortunately, work/wife/woof-barks [delete where applicable] prevent me from making it -which is a pity as it sounds like a blast too!

However, are any of you lot going to Glastonbury? How about a meet-up there? [I must admit - it's going to do my napper in being away from the PC for 5 days]

I'm INbtw, PLAYLOUNGE is off Carnaby street, I think the road is called Beak Street. Anyhoo, if you walk down carnaby street away from Liberty, and turn right at the end, it is on the right hand side. Seems like a good meeting point to me

i would like to go but alas, a number of factors prevent this:
1. i live in Glasgow
2. i will be working (both real job till 16th then film festival for the rest of the month before buggering off to florida Very Happy)
3. number 1 would not be a problem because of cheap travel these days but august is sandwiched between two holidays for me, so spare ££ is in short supply.

but have fun!
