[SPEC] Reconstructionist secrecy - theories

I've decided to bring this stuff over from the puzzles forum, as we've now solved what the Recon message *says*. Now, I'm starting to ask questions about what it *means*.

First off, let me just say, damn good stuff on the solve, guys. I wouldn't have been able to work this kind of thing out personally (as my programming skills are very limited), but I was certainly coming round to the belief that the code had to be decipherable in conjunction with some system or other that we already know well on earth.

The message itself seems (relatively) unambiguous - although there's yet more detail about what Recons believe in that seems hard to interpret straight away - now that Builders are coming into the scenario! There's nothing obvious about this immediately, although my initial thoughts are that it could point in one of two directions:

1. It's more ammunition for the theory that there is a Taoist type reverence for the Cube's generative and creative power amongst the Recons. - the Building may thus have some reference to the Cube's 'construction' of the current Perplexian civilization/universe etc.

2. It implies that Reconstructionism is vaguely Masonic in format (!) - that the Cube (and/or its venerators) are seen as architects of the world society around them, but keep their identity (and thus their influence on society) hidden from those who are not themselves allied to the cause...

Admitedly, I suspect Reconstructionism isn't quite like that either of those hypotheses, but the analogies seem suggestive to me...

Then, there are interesting aspects to the Recon 'fifth column' we've now unearthed. First off, why is it important that the identities are kept secret? I guess the most obvious reasoning might be as follows: to be allied with the Reconstructionist movement openly would downgrade a reputation within Perplexian society. It could be argued that, of the 'allies' identified, all are 'famous' to some extent (a Sentinel columnist, a well - known artist and member of Sente's Recovery team(!), a member of a top selling band), and so, the keeping of their links to Reconstructionism secret is even more important than it might be in the case of ordinary joes.

Indeed, the fact that these folks have some claim to being 'prominent' within Perplexian society at large seems pretty important: here, we have evidence of an intriguing alliance between the anti - secularist sectarians and representatives of precisely some of the *most* secular professions flourishing within the City. This, in itself, rings little Masonic bells to me; back in the 18th century, at least, it was very common for Lodges to invite the great and the good to join the wider cause whilst keeping the details pretty secret.

It may well be that certain interests we know these characters to hold chime well with Reconstructionist principle: Aiko, as has been suggested, has built artworks that deal explicitly with the place of the Cube within Perplexian society, and appears to think something fundamentally is missing from the 'spirituality' of the citizens. If the police have had any suspicion of her links to the Reconstructionist Movement, then it may also go some way to explaining why she was 'victimised' by them in the wake of the Cube theft. Her mentoring by Randall Tokei is also suggestive.

Then we have Thoreau, who (as well as being a notorious hard rocker), has allied himself with a project which is all about clamping down on secular expansion, and promoting the continued existence of what is free and natural. Seems fairly harmless and suitably ecologically friendly at that level, but it's worth recalling that, on Earth, for instance, one of the aims of Aum Supreme Truth was (allegedly) to eradicate all traces of industrial society by force, and make existence return to an Edenic (for which read: feudalistic) state of existence. 'Deep Ecologists' sometimes hold similar views: that industrial expansion is itself a cancer or a disease blighting the land, and, ultimately, retribution will be levelled against those soceities which have supported its progression through centuries.

As to how 'serious' the linkage between Reconstructionism and these people is, that's open to question. The link could be *fairly* innocent: we have a number of fairly well known media celebrities, who are seraching for more spiritual, ecological etc. sustenance than they can get from day - to - day life. They see Reconstructionism as a way to get in touch with these issues, but they want their connections with the movement to be kept fairly quiet for fear of damaging their reputations. They've been invited to a particularly prestigious ceremony, precisely because they're notable people, whose involvement will boost Recon morale internally, even if their contributions can't be broadcast to the world at large. That's the most charitable interpretation - that the Recons. are happy to snap up 'celebs' in order to bolster the standing of their own cause (think about Tom Cruise promoting Scientology).

But, given the secrecy, we might also conclude that something far more sinister is going on here, and that these celebs are literally 'fifth columnists'. Their affiliations to the Reconstuctionists are kept hidden from the eyes of the wider world, but they engineer situations, propaganda etc. that supports Reconstructionist tenets without any else realising. In this sense, Reconstructionism is working on two fronts - those who are formally known to be Reconstructionists are dismissed as easily containable lunatic fringers by Perplexian authorities. But the real forward momentum of the movement is ensured by agents with strong internal influence over the Perplexian media - sphere, whose affiliation to Reconstructionism is actually unknown, or known to very few.

It makes you wonder what all this means for us: how far can certain articles in the Sentinel be trusted? What will it mean to have a known Reconstructionist affiliate contributing to Sente's retrieval team?

We should also consider, as I've mentioned elsewhere, that the lip - service the Recons pay to 'renouncing the world' and the fact that they utilise Earth based algorithims when they encode their information don't really go together. The implication is that there's some degree of...ahem...hypocrisy in the Recon stance. Not that this is unusual, exactly - you can be a religious fundamentalist and still use television and chemical weaponry to get your message across...just so long as it's going to usher in a period of pastoral freedom and consigning of technology to the dustbin in the long run. What's important is that the Recons are ,perhaps, neither so backward, nor so isolated from affecting major events at the centre of Perplexian society, as they seem. That's something which we've been arguing about for ages, but this appears to be evidence that confirms the idea.

These are starting to look like very murky waters indeed, don't you think?

[META][GENERAL SPEC] Theories? Roles of the Recons? Violet?

Soooo...
New encoded message revealing several "unknown" recons... Why do they hide it? Who else is hiding their Reconstructionist affiliations? How are the Recons involved? What was Violet's "phantom post" all about?
So many questions...
I wonder if it's smart for us to trust Violet 100% right now... There was that strange phantom post in her blog, in which she said: "I'm not thinking too clearly right now." Isn't Violet supposed to be quite intelligent? Could the not thinking too clearly be a symptom of a drug she was given while she was at the farm, a drug to mkae her sleep so the Recons could slip in and brainwash/replace/clone/whatever her? Then, once they'd done that, they removed that slightly suspicious looking blog entry and...
It would explain several things which are a bit weird about this last lot. For a start, the out and out LAMENESS of the Gyvann puzzle... Maybe it was lame because the Recons are monitoring Earth's internet, they fed us a random puzzle, and simply picked an answer which they liked the look of out of our guessing, and then had Violet go: "Oh, yes, that's definitely the right answer!" How could she have been so certain then? And then, it was so EASY for them to get the Key, but with a bit of unexpected stuff thrown in. It really reads like something the Recons would make up to convince us that it was all real. Plus this latest file... Is there any reason that the Recons would try to convince us that those people were Recons? Do they have any motive for making us suspicious of them? Have any of the people on that list done anything that could be a threat to the Recons?
I'm feeling paranoid...[/i]

[EDIT: merged thread, new topic heading. yanka.]

Why so sure it is the recons we can't trust? It could well be that, in true movie plot style, the people you think are good guys are in fact the bad guys and the bad guys are the good guys.

Well, I suppose if this *is* all a Recon set - up, then one basic reason that they might wish to 'blacklist' certain indviduals with what I assume to be 'celebrity' status (an up - and - coming artist, a newspaper columnist, a famous rock star etc.) is because these individuals are highly representative of 'secular' Perplexian society. If what the Recons wish to do is show up secular society for the hypocrisy they believe it to be, then it might be advantageous for them to allege that certain individuals of note are actually secret Reconstructionists, even if they aren't. However, that sounds like a plan which would have very short - term consequences - if KT or Aiko were taken in for police questioning, say, on the basis of nothing, then surely, however inconvienient this might be for them, the charges wouldn't stick. It could be that the Recons are simply behaving bloody - mindedly - what they want to see is reputations damaged, as a blow against secular and celebrity society in general - and they think (ironically) that if they can cause the public to mistrust and repudiate these individuals, then they are making some inroads to this end.

Alternatively, the same end could be pursued on the basis that those named *are* actually Reconstructionist supporters of note, who have kept their affiliation secret. By releasing the information, throwing to the wolves a number of those whom they simply consider 'fair weather friends', the Recons are hoping to reveal to Perplexian society as a whole both the fact that Reconstructionism is more powerful a force than they have been imagining, and, simultaneously, that secular protestations can't be trusted - it's as if they would be saying 'look what hypocrites you seculars are! Substantial numbers of your own greatest citizens are secret Reconstructionists! Your society cannot be working! Reconstructionism is the only way forward!'.

This would be playing a highly dangerous, and duplicitous, game, of course, because it could easily backfire - it could simply show up Reconstructionism as a religion so soulless that the Recons are quite prepared to stab their own supporters in the back if it suits, or they feel betrayed. Rest assured, this would be a bit like Stalinist purging and so on - it wouldn't exactly generate much sympathy for the Recon stance. That kind of reaction would probably be even more marked if the Recons. are deliberately setting up people who don't have any connections to the sect, in which case they might get found out, be accused of perjury, and lose whatever standing they possess right now. On the other hand, if they could 'leak' such info without anyone being prepared to identify what the initial source was, they might get away with it. And perhaps they would bank on the fact that Violet could never admit what she'd done (breaking and entering etc.) for fear of condemnation - so, in effect, she couldn't reveal her sources...

Alternatively, of course, it's possible that those who are said to be Recon. supporters actually are, that they remain active in the movement and proselytise for the cause surreptitiously within wider Perplexian society without anyone knowing, and that the message was genuinely an internal memo that was meant to remain secret, and inaccessible.

I rather like the most paranoid of the theories I've expanded above (as you can no doubt tell by now, the more convoluted the plot gets, the better I like it), but I wonder if it's really feasible. The simplest explanation is quite simply that there *are* 'fifth columnists' out there, and we've got to keep an eye on them...

But I guess we never know...

[Is it worth combining my previous spec. on 'fifth columns' with this thread, by now?]

Masons

The Masonic thingy had occured to me too. My knowledge on the masons is derived entirely from The Da Vinci Code, so I don't consider it correct or complete! Having said that, this rather ethereal insubstantial thought occured:

In our world the Illuminati fought the church, it was the body of science. Science was fighting for a place in the spiritual world of the time.

In PPC perhaps it is the spiritual world fighting for a place in the scientific world. Perhaps the reconstructionists are fighting the dogmatic secular society of PPC.

Just as the Illuminati were fighting the restrictive dogmatic world of the church so the Recons are fighting the restrictive dogmatic world of science.

And so one could see PPC as what would have happened if our world was initially based upon science and not religion, supporting the parellel universe hypothesis.

Ying and Yang, only in balance can things be right and all that.

(Please note I treat this whole area of conversation as mythology, usefull ideas used to make stories more interesting)

Of course, it could just be that the people listed have decided that they want to keep some of their private lives (such as their chosen religion) actually private and not plastered all over the news feeds.

We on Earth seem to be so used to the idea of celebrities private lives being laid bare that perhaps it is hard for us to perceive how someone would want to keep the details of their private lives to themselves?

Depends which Violet you're talking about Wink

She's definitely not lived up to the little reputation she gave herself when we first met her, so I might have to agree with you that I don't trust her completely.

Not sure we should be so hard on her

I think that the nature of the puzzles that she can't solve tells us a bit about the nature of the puzzles that they're used to in Perplexcity. The Befunge stack, as far as I understand it, was deliberately designed to be extremely difficult to compile...an perfect example of Earth obtuseness! And the key puzzle was almost over simplistic.

There's a whole load of us tackling (or in my case heckling) each puzzle and many brains makes light work, or a big confused mess.

More interesting to me is that the Recons favour Earth-style puzzles. Why? And how long for? Have they had contact with Earth before? IS there a Recon compound on Earth (bet Madonna would join if there was)?...

agree with you, tanner. I've waiting for some riot or abduction of Academy personnel during the "Cube hunt" and related activities tomorrow.

and I still think that Abaddon Rule's presentation sounds sinister, given his name and his play....

Now that'd set the cats amongst the pigeons...sounds very, very interesting. But I dunno. If it happens, it would be the single most audacious thing to happen in game since the original theft, I imagine. And, frankly, very little seems to have happened in - game so far of any greatly dynamic magnitude. We thought Violet going 'deep cover' into the Recon compound would be a big deal - it didn't turn out to amount to much. We thought Aiko being arrested was part of a significant backlash against the Recons. - it wouldn't appear to be. So, could be that Solstice Day is a big damp squib, too. It'd be nice to think we'll have something dramatic to get our teeth into, but I really wonder...

All will be revealed (or not, as the case may be) tomorrow...
