Batman Begins

How can I stress enough just how good Batman Begins is? I'm not a fan of the Batman movies or comics, but after seeing the ten minute preview during Smallville a few weeks ago, I knew I had to see this one. What a spectacular flick.

It's dark and moody and brilliantly choreographed...stylish without being stylized. The music is more than background or milestones for action--it's another character.

There is nothing comic-book-like in this episode. It's genuine drama/action. It's not muddied up with over-the-top characatures. The people are realistic and well-developed. Bruce Wayne is fully drawn, not as a superhero but as a man in pain determined not to become what he hates most yet embrace what he fears most.

The performances are understated and believable. The storyline can be followed with ease. The car chase was even fun, which they rarely are these days.

The scene with the ninjas (when you see the movie, you'll know which one I mean) is breathtaking.

Forget Star Wars, this is the summer movie to see.

I really liked it.... just some random thoughts that I'll spoiler out of politenesss...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Scarecrow was the PERFECT villan to start with - very appropriately creepy, and I also liked that it was more of a calm, composed evil character, rather than someone who's just "GRAAAH I WILL KILL EVERYTHING!"

I really liked how dark Gotham was... I liked Spiderman, but the city is so darn light and fluffy sometimes... I really liked how gritty Gotham could be. Mmm grits.

I've noticed they removed the signature nipples from Batman's suit (the ones that were really freaking obvious in the earlier movies) and added them to Katie Holmes shirt in later scenes. Hm.

Go see it! Very Happy

Amen. The director also did Memento, so I expected good things from him, but truly, "good" doesn't cover it. This is a great movie. I'm even going to go out on a limb and say it's the best movie I've seen this year.

There's a joke in there somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it.

totally agree.

utterly awesome movie.

buying the soundtrack, too, all orchestral.

Everything makes sense, in a believable way.

And it leaves me wanting to have hours of late-night philosophical discussions about the nature of good and evil, justice and revenge, order and balance, crime and punishment.

plus, just a bit of a nod to a few of the things from the TV show. ;)

We walked out saying about the same. This played like a good drama, with just enough little one liners to give a few giggles in just the right places. Michael Caine was perfect (I was worried he'd "overdo" it, but he didn't).
"Does it come in black" - nice line.

This household really hopes they shoot more episodes (and then we started debating what villans and how they could create them without being cartoonish - because while Nicholson & Carey were very very entertaining, Burton's vision was too camp, and wouldn't match Nolan's Batman universe).

Best movie of the year? For real?

Maybe it's just me, but I had significant problems with the film that center around the juxtaposition between the three acts. It's not that each act is bad (except for the third); it's just that the three portions of the film don't flow together very well. Each act feels like it belongs to its own film, and the acts don't go together very well. For instance, the first act where Wayne is in the East is incredibly compelling, well-acted and entertaining right up until Bruce's explosive departure. It felt out of character, and it led into a second act that felt out of sync with the first act.

I really had no problems with the second act, other than that it brought elements into the movie that never paid off in the third act. Although, we could have really used a classic, iconic shot of the Batman standing in the shadows, cape draped over him in gothic fashion, tall and terrifying.

Heh, nipples ...

Then, the third act, which, if not completely dropping the ball, certainly tanked whatever kind of analog and dirty atmosphere the second act tried to bring to Gotham City. Let me make this clear: I hated the train. Hated it. Bruce Wayne's father created the elevated train system as a way to unite and revitalize Gotham City, while Ra's al-Ghul used the trains as a means to destroy Gotham. It creates a situation where you have to see Bruce as having two fathers, his original dad and al-Ghul, each of whom we're supposed to see as being two sides of the same coin. It brings to the table a kind of symmetry that doesn't need to be there. Ra's is a compelling enough villain that we don't need that kind of subtext in order to think of him as the bad guy.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The microwave emitter is the biggest problem in the movie, creating an almost VanHelsing level of stupidity. The microwave emitter turns liquid water to water vapor as a means of disseminating the Scarecrow's fear gas - which is very reminiscent of the Joker's laughing gas from the 1989 Batman film - and it's strong enough to affect several square miles. So, why wasn't it exploding human bodies, which are made mostly of water?

I'm not trying to ruin the movie for you all. It's essentially a good movie with some design decisions that dragged it down a bit, and it's definitely worth seeing. However, it's certainly not a contender for Film of the Year. In fact, we've only had one really good movie this year that I've seen, and that's Sin City. Hopefully, Land of the Dead and War of the Worlds will be great, and then we'll have three.

DreamoftheRoad - I had the exact same problem with the premise of the nasty evil weapon of mass destruction utilized - Complained about it from the moment it was unveiled. Guess it was just "in the script".
