[UPDATE] Scarlett Kite - June 21 - Solstice

Happy solstice day!
Category: me, 06:21 PM

Hey, it's solstice day - happy holidays! Went to the balloon-release this morning which was really magnificent, seeing all those white balloons drifting off into the sky which is so incredibly blue this morning. Just, wow. And now there are all sorts of events at the Academy, so I'll head along there. This time of year always reminds me of being a kid again, getting dressed up in costume for a party, taking part in the cube hunt. I've still got a few of those little cubes in a bowl on my bookshelf; they're so pretty, decorated in different colours.

Reminds me of how one year, when I was about 7, so Vi must have been about 13 - we decided to hint to some of the other kids that there was a whole bunch of cubes hidden in my dad's office. When he came back, he found these kids all over his office, turning out his drawers, looking under his furniture! Violet got into a lot of trouble about that and I didn't at all, I guess because I was younger. I felt guilty, but not very guilty Wink.

Of course she waits to post till 6:21 Razz

the fact that the world of ppc hits the same point in orbit around their primary as us at the same time has some interesting ramifications.

It has been known for her to do this now and then...you may have forgotten her recent remarks about mooning over somebody dreamy, whilst watching all those fluffy white clouds move across the blue, blue sky...Ah, she's sweet, ain't she?

I do wonder about Scarlett - for a budding journalist, she has a fairly deficient ability to visualise...'The sky was blue, like, wow...' ; but, hell, as her word freak of a librarian sister can't spell, either...Smile

Seriously, though, no offence to the lovely Misses Kiteway, ever ready to at least communicate with us mere mortals in some capacity or other. But, even though I would be rather gutted if Scarlett were to be suddenly kidnapped and tortured by Reconstructionist fanatics (which doesn't seem fair on the girl, frankly), there are a few times when her blog is a bit too Bridget Jones and a bit too little Kiss me Deadly, for my liking. But, hey, she's 19, she fancies boys, she likes going on gambols with her friends...

Maybe something exciting may happen soon (I keep hoping that...)

I was thinking the same thing. Let's just ignore the infinite universe, infinite possibilities argument for a moment and concentrate on a limited area of space, say our galaxy. Despite there being countless other planets out there, the chances of another having both years (time take to orbit the sun) the same length as ours, days (time taken to spin once on it's axis) the same length as ours and having seasons perfectly synced with ours are incredibly small. The chances of finding an inhabited world with these properties are even smaller.

OK, so if their orbit is approximately the same size as ours (and for their planet to be habitable and Earth-like it must be) then their year could well be the same. But there's no reason for the length of the day to be the same as ours e.g. Venus rotates very slowly, so it's days last several Earth months. And our seasons are caused by the convenient tilt of our planet's axis - it's tilted just enough to make a noticable difference without it being unbareable for a lot of the planet. Basically, what I'm trying to say is this is a literally astronomical conincidence......

....unless you subscribe (as I do) to the theory that they're either on an alternate-universe Earth or an Earth somewhere in the future. I find the latter most convincing simply because the apparently have various cultural leftovers from our world (phrases like Card Sharp, the use of English, the names of places like the Mobius Strip, 7 day weeks just like us, etc.).

lol Very Happy

More like: "Honestly, this really isn't a game. No, really! Just bugger off, will you. There is no game! Look, nothings happened, and nothing will. No game. Nada."

Very Happy

One of the other headlines got me thinking along these lines as well.

NEWS IN BRIEF

Hot Summer Expected

Despite the cool, rainy spring, meteorologists believe that we should expect a particularly hot, dry summer. "Looks like the peak in a ten-year cycle," said Academy researcher Violet Owens. She suggested extra care be taken this year with hydration and skin protection during outdoor activities.

I was wondering whether there are any equivalent decadal cycles on Earth, there's good old El Nino/La Nina, but they're more frequent (and more random), and there are plenty of longer cycles, and then I came across this in USA Today(question and answer edited, see link above for full):

USA Today wrote:

Q: Are there cyclical, decadal weather patterns that span multiple years?
A: Meteorologists have not found any climate oscillations or weather patterns that repeat at consistent, fixed intervals. Most climate oscillations are rather random or erratic.

So Violet Owen's comment either indicates a difference between here and there, or it's wrong. It's quite a trite statement so could be an over-simplification on her part, but we don't get fixed weather cycles of the kind that she suggests

Huh, whadaya know! Surprised I always thought we DID get those - based on the 11 year sunspot cycle (or 22 year, depending on how you look at it). Maybe Vi (or the PMs) bought into the general belief in weather cycles, just like I did. Could this be meant to help us guess that PXC is in our own future? Even if we leave weather aside, would shorter sunspot cycles indicate our future, past, or some other world?

That's a good point, she doesn't say what cycle she's talking about. It might be a snippet she expands on in the full article saying that there's a peak in x which has caused the hot weather rather than the hot weather occurs every ten years.

On the sunspot front, we're currently in a bit of a trough
