You know, I'm wondering if Pietro Salk's condition was inspired by Lockwood's in the BBV Doctor Who spinoff "AUTON 3" (the last in the AUTON series - the first was AUTON, the second AUTON 2: Sentinel).

Perhaps Mr Salk it supposed to be used like Lockwood was . . . a sheep driven through a minefield . . . Shocked

Heh, I was just about to post what you said and thought I'd refresh the thread first. Smile SOO, I've been using cscript to navigate the maze recently, but instead I'll see if I can write it in VB (which will allow me to feed back the map info), and I should (as you say) be able to make it self mapping..

For anyone else who's got programming skills and fancies this, feel free to ask me questions, it's pretty obvious what's happening though (I advise moving at speed 15 due to the bounce problems!)

Another note BTW, as far as I can tell, Maze 6 isn't the same map for everyone. It may be randomly generated (which would explain why it's not reverse-engineerable)

Cheers...

Hey, anyone know how to get HyperTerminal to display what you're typing? The blankness is driving me a little nuts, and it's been ages since I've telnetted, so I can't remember. Very Happy

There is bound to be a "local echo" option.

Also, something I was theorizing last night was that there is bound to be a terminal program with the ability to define macros. Maybe Hyper Terminal will let you do this? At any rate, if you were to, say, define the arrow keys to send various "[0,-15]\n" style commands, it might be easier to input the intertial data.

not quite sure what to make of this so far......so if you're doing this make sure your map is the same!

Well, that's troubling. Let me try it again (on a different machine, even) to see what I get.

You can use:

set localecho

To turn an echo of localised nature on in Telnet. However, for some reason this doesn't work for my terminal. Hope you have better luck.

*snaps fingers* Local echo! Thank you! That's so much better. Very Happy

Nah, HyperTerminal is an extremely basic Telnet program that comes with Windows--absolutely no bells OR whistles. Wink However, I do recall a program that I used to use back in my MUDding days called zMUD that would let you do macros and triggered responses and things like that. Can't play with it at work, but for any of you bored at home and working off a PC, you can find more info about it here.

It is odd thought that mind candy would set a puzzle that so few users would be able to do.

They have said the maze will be released for PC in a few days. Probably with several bugs, needing numerous patches, graphics issues and major instability.

ok, anyone mapping out the level 6 maze might find this useful. It's a lotsxlots grid of light & mid blue squares. Open it up in Paint or whatever, zoom in lots (i'm working at 1100%!). Select a single pixel blaxk brush and start painting in walls as you find them. If you've got PhotoShop, The Gimp or similar, make a new layer, fill with 25% opacity grey, then you can erase squares as well as draw in walls, so you know where you've explored.

(1) Alternate lines and 3's will get you within two steps
(2) Watch out for the special case! (3) /0
Is no-one gonna try this? Sad

Ok, I hacked together a small Java program to allow you to enter input by clicking direction buttons. The program is an executable jar - so for you folks on windows you should be able to just double click it to launch it.

Notes:
- It's extremely basic - so don't expect too much Smile
- Start maze.jar first then this jar
- If you click a button and nothing happens - it means you are up against an invisible wall. The best way to check this is, until I can incorporate the feedback from the secondary port, is to telnet localhost 5398 and see what it's spitting out.
- The ball will keep rolling in one direction until it hits a wall or you click another button, so for those cases where you only want it to move a few squares, keep this in mind
- It really helps to look at the level maps that BriEnigma has posted Smile
- The Java source file is also included inside the Jar if you want to look at it or modify it; you can open the Jar using WinZip or a similar program.
MazeInput.zip

Hey! I just logged in to post the very same thing! Great minds think alike, eh? I guess ours do, too. Wink

At any rate, the instructions are similar to Step's. Launch maze.jar (directly, not by using the startmaze.pl script), then launch rovr-1.0.jar.

A window will pop up, and just like the curses/console version, it needs focus. Keystrokes entered into it are the same as the console version (directions and stop). I have yet to spend time deciphering the status codes that get returned, but they get displayed at the bottom of the window.

The JAR file you'll need to run the app:
http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/notes/maze/rovr-1.0.jar

The Java source code for those that want to hack around with it:
http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/notes/maze/rovr-1.0-src.tgz
I think the object and event model are pretty solid, but there is currently very little documentation and the UI needs work. Hey, what do you expect? I'm an embedded systems programmer, not a GUI coder.

Heh, and I've done one in VB Smile Won't bother posting as it's only going to be any use once it's mapping too.. Any news on getting the same map twice Brian?

Yeah, I either got a different map or a different starting position within the same map. I was not able to spend enough time to tell.
