[Puzzle] the coordinates puzzle

Oddly enough the coordinates puzzle is listed as solved on the wiki, but as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to have been solved. If it has I didn't find it after a lot of reading and searching.

regardless I've spent some time mulling it over.

I tried duplicating the flash program found in the Hint2.png file in Vis' folder. It's valid, but my computer gagged on the math. (BADLY) Aside from that: tx, ty, and s are undefined variables, so I had to fake them.

Eventually I gave up trying to make flash work and I went back to the wiki.

not quite coords but recipes & recipe algorithm parametric function polynomial expression its all the same doncha know

So I simply ripped all the point out as was and slapped them into excel. I knocked together a scatter plot and lo and behold: they look like points on a parametric function.

in fact I'm quite certain it's a specific parametric function because I have a hazy memory of being in a calculus class and flipping through the book and seeing a function that had a graph very much like this one would have. It has something to do with sin or cos getting exponentially larger or something... it's probably like "x, sin(y^x)" or something bizzare like that. my real problem is that I'm sure it's a specific formula. I just don't remember WHAT the formula is. The other problems are what do the numbers that each coordinate is associated with mean? (I put them on as labels for tracking purposes) and what about that one little point (38) down at the bottom that *doesn't* fit the rest of the function?

So I'm basically stuck for now and I thought I'd post this to let other people mull over this alternative. It would explain why the numbers are both irrational and given to us in so excessively long a form...

wow - I can't believe I didn't put the solve on that page. It was one of those things that we were working on, and solved in the midst of another puzzle and because it ended what we were currently working on - we just kinda stopped updating for the time being.

anyway, I believe the solution was found by Daedalus (with help from vidstudent and JoeUser). We were given hints by viz on the hint2.png.

...that bottom right looks like computer code with tx and ty in it; I'm guessing that's for the curve slopes we've been seeing.

I don't think they're slopes, but positions that vary with s.

The code is Flash stuff, which I haven't used, but here's what I figure:

Code:
duplicateMovieClip(circle1,"nc0",this.getNextHighestDepth())

This creates a copy of the movie called circle1, names the copy nc0 and places it at the front of the screen.

Code:
nc0.x = tx;
nco.y = ty;

places the movie at coordinates tx and ty (defined elsewhere).

All the subsequent calls are creating circles around that central point (tx,ty).

You place a circle in the middle and add circles of the same diameter around it. That's the classical method for constructing a "pentagram".

Put "pentagram" in door-page, and you've solved the "obvious trail".

Sorry that this wasn't made clearer in the wiki. I guess I must go and fix that Very Happy

ah. I see. ^_^; yet... I still have one question. Why are we given 10 circles? I can't find a single construction of a pentagon/pentagram that requires 10 circles. I know that technically the puzzle's been solved... but... ^_^;;;

Edit: Nevermind. it works. I'm an airhead and I had to map it out myself just to be sure. ^_^; still doesn't explain to me a few other things but hey ^_^ I should quit while I'm ahead.

...I need to get my hands on mathmatica.

As far as I remember, this solve was for one of the equations, namely the one which was used in the flash.
There were more, if I remember right, that were never solved or connected to the particular flash-file
