I want to join in!

I'm really new to ARGs and am really new to Perspex City as well, having only discovered it a couple of days ago.

I've read countless posts on the forum to try and familiarise myself with the game, and some of the sections pointing beginners in the right direction were very helpful. However, the more I read, the more I feel bogged down in a quagmire of discussions by seasoned ARG professionals, computer programmers and professors of mathematics. Is this something anyone can join in, or do I need to take a couple of crash courses on decompiling software and Avogadro's Hypothesis first?!

I feel a little out of my depth here, but I'd love to join in. Please help!

There's no required knowledge for ARGs. Anyone can join in. That's one of the beautiful things about the genre. Even if all you have to contribute is a bit of spec here or there, you're still part of the community. If you want, you can join us in #syzygy or just lurk around here. I'm sure you'll find something you can help with eventually. Until then, glad to have you around

Well, for a start, it's Perplex, not Perspex. But apart from that, everyone has their unique skills, and there's a good chance that you'll pick up on something new that nobody else has thought of, so contribute where you can.

Don't be put off by the hardcoreness of some of it, because hey - I can't do any of that stuff either. Personally, I happilly follow along by enjoying the game itself and occasionally joining in with a bit of speculation on the forums, appreciating the work of the puzzle-geniuses from afar. Certainly, you shouldn't feel like you can't play because you can't compete with the best of the best - otherwise 95% of us wouldn't be here!

So my advice is to hang out in General/Updates and enjoy the story, join in some of the more accessible discussions - when it comes to puzzles, part of the goodness is admiring the whipsmart folks that find an elegant solution (or hacking the program to bits!) you know you'd never have got in a million years.

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me using the array of buttons just below this post. Welcome aboard!

Everyone's pretty friendly round here so I think most people would be more than willing to answer questions if you PM (Personal Message - click the PM button) them.

Not me though; I'm a sociopath Very Happy

EDIT: Oh, and you might want to check the Quick Reference board and the Beginners thread, then stop by the Wiki as that should pretty much bring you up to speed without having to wade through the mountain of back-posts on the main forums.

One of the interesting things that I've found in playing ARGs is how quickly you learn a load of tricks that can come in useful in solving puzzles and such. I only started playing these over the Easter holidays, and I started by posting manically with wild speculation over storyline progression, and getting rather obbsessed with one particular clue-which-wasn't-actually-anything-of-the-sort...
/me hangs head...
Anyway, over time (what, 3 months?) I'm now involved in about 4 or 5 games at the same time, and am even throwing in a couple of useful ideas (I got a couple of solves myself in the Seen James? game, which I was rather proud of Very Happy )

So, in conclusion, lurk around, post random posts as and when you like, jump into IRC (irc.chatsolutions.net #syzygy, also available here) and chat to us all, we're generally friendly, or overfriendly if drunk Smile

Umm, yeah, if you want any help with anything there is a row of buttons below, as GuyP said, so MSN/AIM/email/PM me if you have any questions Smile

Have fun!

Jeb

EDIT: OOOH! POST 500!

If you're like me, you can just write endless speculations and digressions in high - flown language that everyone else on the boards can complain about. It's good fun Wink
