Let's Bring Back the Fun

Last night, for the first time in a long time, I truly felt like a member of the community. I got to hang out in #heist and watch the end game. People were excited, people were chatty, people were happy to be there. People were willing to share info and repost details for folks who came into the channel late and wanted to know what was going on. It all felt very good.

It all felt very familiar. We used to be like this a lot more. I know it's been difficult lately, with all the negativity about launches and the like, but it can be like this more if we try. We're a good group of people, we're witty, we're intelligent and many of us are quite good-looking. Wink I want to ask everyone to take a step back, remember why they got interested in ARG in the first place, and try to get back to that simple joy. Because it's fun.

I want ARGs to be fun. I want to be entertained, and I want to hang out with people who derive the same enjoyment from them that I do. People who whine, people who snark, people who keep stirring the ashes of posts that turn into flamefests, are not fun. Yes, we all have our opinions, but it's time to let the meta stuff cool off a bit and focus on the games. If games are bad, if games are ill-designed, ignore them. If you are a PM and your game is being ignored, don't spam the forum with anonymous posts trying to prod people to play. Stop, rethink your design, and rewrite as necessary. As imbri so wonderfully said, PM responsibly. You don't get carte blanche just because you decide you want to run a game. You have to entertain, you have to intrigue. These are games. They are supposed to be fun. And quite honestly, the players know what is fun better than any would-be PM.

So, deep breath everyone. Reset. New game. Let's have fun.

Gupfee

Just substitute "ARG" for "novel"!

I'm sorry, I simply cannot agree to this specious line of reasoning. I am vehemently opposed to the existence, or even the mere APPEARANCE, of fun in any and all of its myriad forms. Meta is not about "fun". Meta is about relentless self-analysis, verging on the minutae-laden exploratory crawl deep into one's navel or up into the unreachable heights of one's symbolic intellectual colon. Meta makes no allowance whatsoever for useless displays of frivolity, enjoyment, fraternity or community. Criticism uber alles. Fight the power.

As Charlton Heston was wont to say: "You people can have my Nutella when you pry it from my COLD DEAD FINGERS."
