Hello and welcome to Unfiction, Fireflyfan. Very Happy

Ilovebees was what's known as an Alternate Reality Game, or ARG -- a genre of gaming in which players come together and form communities in order to solve the mysteries of an interactive fiction that involves solving puzzles, communicating with characters, and participating in the plot.

ILB was designed as a promotion for the videogame Halo 2, but it's also a stand-alone story in its own right.

A link to the website appeared in the trailer for Halo 2 that was shown before a movie (I forget which one). The site appeared to be the website for a small business in California called Margaret's Honey, administrated by Margaret's niece Dana. The website appeared to have been taken over and corrupted by an unknown entity.

Gradually, that entity put itself back together and we learned it was an AI named Melissa. Melissa's ship had been on a critical mission involving an alien artifact when something had happened and she had unexpectedly been shipwrecked back here in 2004.

Damaged, frightened (some might say "paranoid" Wink ), and alone, Melissa attempted to use the unfamiliar (and to her, primitive) technology of our time to locate and communicate with her crew members (who, unbeknownst to her, were still back in the future). Dana, thinking her server had been hacked or infected, ran programs to get rid of the intruder, which Melissa interpreted as an attack. Coordinates for payphones, and times that they would ring, appeared on the website, and Melissa struck back at Dana, causing her to flee to China.

We dutifully answered the payphones, answered a question regarding the story so far, and were treated to a short clip from an audio drama taking place in Melissa's time -- the events leading up to an attack by the aliens (the Covenant).

We also became aware of two other presences on ILB.com -- a playful, childlike feminine entity dubbed the Sleeping Princess (a "rogue process" whom Melissa was attempting to destroy), and the Pious Flea, a simple program attempting to "attach" to either Melissa or the Sleeping Princess, who repeated "Seek the Truth, Behold the Truth, Reveal the Truth -- that is the whole of the Law."

Eventually, random players began getting live calls from Melissa, rather than a recording of her. She asked them to do various things to prove they were her crew, and gradually came to trust us more. Eventually, with the help of a player named Weephun, she captured the Sleeping Princess, but the SP escaped with the help of another player named Hmrpita.

Meanwhile, it was becoming apparent that Melissa's story and that of the audio drama were connected.

I won't spoil the audio drama for you.

Read the links on the page Weephun suggested, and listen to the assembled audio files on ilovebees.com, especially Rowan's Guide. It won't be quite the same as playing, but it will help you understand the game and the way an ARG plays out.

And then, you can join us in the next big game that launches, if it sounds fun to you. Very Happy
