[UPDATE] New website - www.ascendancypoint.com

Thank you, wiglaf!

http://www.ascendancypoint.com

Can we get at TA's page through here?

Anyway, some interesting info!

Visitors

Visitors to the Point will be particularly interested in our 165th-floor Observation Level, with its unparalleled views across the city. The upper floors also offer several dining options, from the Vista restaurant, a favourite celebrity haunt, to the cheerful Red Hot Bakery, famed for its innovative flavours and tastes. Not only is the Point an architectural achievement in its own right, but it is also home to some of the city's most prized art pieces. In particular, the murals in the Grand Atrium are a very popular feature for visitors. They represent the Five Tasks of Madna in the writings of Lemnal:

* Navigating the Maze of Stars
* Stealing the apple from the jaws of the giant crocodile
* Filling the Mazy River using a jug
* Slaying the bird-headed demon Rifvar
* Outwitting Losik, the trickster, in a wrestling match

The building is open 365 days a year and there is no charge for visiting.

About

Ascendancy Point is located in the commercial centre of Perplex City. Its main entrance is on Ascendancy Way which runs parallel to Fivebridges Lane. Constructed in 259AC, it is the tallest building in the city, surpassing the Noh Tower by more than 400 metres. It employs a staff of over 1,000 people, and provides space for more than 3,500 businesses, as well as welcoming millions of tourists through its doors every year.

Contact

Ascendancy Point is currently completely tenanted and all its commercial outlets are full. Unfortunately, therefore, we are unable to enter into negotiations with potential residential or business tenants. If you are interested in hearing when space does become available, we suggest you ask your real-estate broker to register with us for occasional updates.

When the Sentinel article quoted from one of the leasing brochures for Ascendancy Point I wondered if such a brochure was already online so I just tried ascendancypoint.com, and there it was.

yet the sentinel article said

Management plans to use the event both to cement the structure's reputation as a prestigious address and to woo prosperous citizens who currently reside elsewhere.

so they're full but they're trying to woo new tenants?

say..... what gives?

It's like the bouncer at a really swanky bar not letting people in. It's not that they are fFull, they don't really want any old body coming in. They've got room fFor the beautiful people. Or the wealthy.

Or, at any given moment, they actually are fFull; but people come and go often. in a building with thousands of tennants, openings come up up pretty often here and there, fFor various reasons. So they want to woo the better clientelle. Trade up.

Agreed, with that many tenants there is probably a high turnover rate. Alos, they could be attempting to create "a limited supply, high demand "situation in order to kick up the asking prices.

Yeah, not to mention it explains some of the Futures signs. The first one corresponds to the Maze, the second one to the Apple-Thief, and the third to the Half-Filled Jug. But I'm not sure what the last two are supposed to represent.

I know there's probably no reason to bring it to attention. I just thought it might be important in some future Future-related puzzle.

edit: Maybe the fourth one is supposed to be the Eagle and the last one is supposed to be the Hand? (I'm really hoping the last one is not supposed to correspond to The Three Balls, but then again I don't know much about this Losik character.)

Well spotted - I think this is quite important as it shows they have at least some mythology.

I don't know why, but I always associated the Three Balls, with that old 'cup and ball' trick...you know, where the viewer has to decide which cup the ball's under. True, it only ever looks as if there's one ball involved, because that's the trick. If you've ever done it, you know it needs three. My mind works in strange ways, doesn't it? Even I am wondering what the hell I'm talking about by now Smile

Hmmm, I always figured the three balls thing was something to do with pawnbrokers, since that's what the old pawnbroker sign features:

That is exactly of what I have thought in the past. FYI

Quote:
The pawnbroker's symbol is three balls suspended from a bar. The three ball symbol is attributed to the Medici Family of Florence, Italy, or to the House of Lombard, a banking family in medieval London, England. According to legend, a Medici employed by Charles the Great slew a giant using three bags of rocks. The three ball symbol became the family crest. Since the Medicis were so successful in the financial, banking, and moneylending industries, other families also adopted the symbol. Throughout the middle ages, coats of arms bore three balls, orbs, plates, discs, coins, and more as symbols of monetary success. Pawnbrokers (and their detractors) joke that the three balls mean "Two to one, you won't get your stuff back".

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of pawnbrokers.

The famous nursery rhyme "Pop Goes the Weasel" contains rhymes that are about pawning items. The word "pop" means to pawn, and a "weasel" is a tool used by tailors in making clothing.

Quote:
The Least Known Legend

One of the most least known origins that has been researched is the coin known as the "Silver Shekel" or "Shekel of Israel" which was issued in A.D. 68 after a Jewish revolt against the Romans. One side of the coin depicted three pomegranates, with a common stalk.

Saint Nicholas – The Patron Saint of Pawnbrokers

Through his great acts of kindness and generosity, Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of many; of seafaring men, of marriageable young women, of the falsely accused, of endangered travelers, of farmers, of children (of course), of merchants, and of pawnbrokers. Pawnbrokers and bankers in northern Italy, who would look to Saint Nicholas as their patron saint, would hang three golden balls above the doors of their shops in tribute to, and for good luck from, their Saint Nicholas.

This shows yet more parallels with some of our Earth mythology. May I direct your attention please to the 12 labours of Hercules:

Wikipedia wrote:
1. Slay the Nemean Lion and bring back its skin.
2. Slay the Lernaean Hydra.
3. Capture the Ceryneian Hind.
4. Capture the Erymanthian Boar.
5. Clean the Augean stables in one day.
6. Slay the Stymphalian Birds.
7. Capture the Cretan Bull.
8. Steal the Mares of Diomedes.
9. Obtain the Girdle of Hippolyte.
10. Obtain the Cows of Geryon.
11. Steal the Apples of the Hesperides.
12. Capture Cerberus.

Compared to:
The Five Tasks of Madna in the writings of Lemnal wrote:
* Navigating the Maze of Stars
* Stealing the apple from the jaws of the giant crocodile
* Filling the Mazy River using a jug
* Slaying the bird-headed demon Rifvar
* Outwitting Losik, the trickster, in a wrestling match

So, we got Madna stealing apples like Hercules stealing a golden apple from nymph-type things in task #11, and slaying a bird demon, like his Earthly equivalent encounter with Stymphalian birds in #6.
As for outwitting tricksters, this could be the perplexian version of winning a battle, like Herculian tasks #1-4, #7 or #12 to name a few - they do favour intelegence over physique after all. The same could be said about filling the river, or could even be compared to other 'impossible' tasks like (#5) cleaning the stables of hundreds horses, etc.

There are of course other cultures hinted, eg: the ancient egyptians were big on crocodiles, they even worshipped one - but I'm sure all you people like Salkunh that worked on 'Master of Secrets' can handle that area far better.
