Leeravitz, FYI:
Quote:
As far as we can tell, the history of the place we now know as Perplex City began in around 3500BC, when several nomadic groups developed semi-permanent settlements around the Mazy River. At that time, the area was known as the Pur Leks, or the "Place which is rich in silver". The Mazy River could at one time be "panned" for silver and the much later silver mines under much of the city eventually became part of the extensive run of catacombs. The ancient word for silver - Lek - is still used, albeit in a modern spelling, to refer to our modern-day currency.

From the Academy history page (which also mentions the Homeric Lemnal).

PS. If someone could update the Wiki with the extensive and uncatalogued info available at the Academy website, that would be fantastic.

Yep, that's what I was trying to remember! And it sort of bears out my point: there came a time, eventually, when the mining works started to develop massively, and maybe that's part of the reason that the City expanded to the size it did. I vaguely recollect mention in the Sentinel of research into sea - going vessels that had supported the silver carrying trade, and when this isn't putting me in mind of the Spanish activities between Europe and the Americas circa 1500 - 1630, it's reminding me of colonial endeavours and gold rush fever in 19th century South Africa, California, Alaska etc.

I guess we still have no date to pin on such a possibility, however. The catacombs themselves are said to be ancient, but what the article implies is that the mine workings eventually ending up dovetailing into the catacombs that had been hollowed out long before. So, the mines were dug more recently than 'ancient times', I guess (whatever that means)!

This weekend I started writing a proper "Perplex City" wiki entry. There are many gaps and holes. but it's a fFar cry fFrom where it was on fFriday. I'll continue with it a little later. unless someone else does.

If you write: Think "Encyclopedia". dont hang around minutae on a big topic page.

Right with you there Leeravitz - the only thing that doesn't gel for me however is the gathering feeling that Perplexians don't seem to travel much. After Michiko Clarks obvious bemusement on the subject of air travel (almost as if she couldn't even imagine the concept) I looked at the history on the Academy site etc, in a different light. I now feel that the population could never have been truly nomadic. If anything it seems to be antithetical to their charactor. They never seem to talk about far away lands, exotic destinations, romantic ocean voyages... y'know? All their developement is looking decidedly stay-at-home. Albeit driven in the early days by silver. Ahem.

Just a theory - I have never really heard a mention of a world, Perplex? so Perplex City becomes City of the world? We are on earth - they are on .. what Perplex City? Could the place be just one vast landmass - some places split off to become smaller Cities?

The fact that they are not mentioned does not mean they exist but think about the reverse situation. If say America makes contact with another world then the whole world would like to get involved - send emails, contact the other life forms.

For some reason I think that Perplexian world is very small.

If I have missed indications though please let me know.

Also I do recall something back in April about a false alarm at Ascendancy Point? The building's fire alarm went off? Twitchy systems? Hindsight such a wonderful thing.

I've wondered about that myself... Could it be that PPC and the surrounding land are in a great, environment controlled dome, and that all the land outside is radioactive wasteland filled with mutants? Probably not. But I do wonder what else there is...

You're quite right, it was in the Sentinel under More Headline as "False Alarm at Ascendancy"

I'd agree that this is unlikely. We don't hear much about the ouside world, but we know of provinces like Gladstone and there have been headlines and bylines in the Sentinel such as "Import Duty Revenue Rises" that would indicate the existence of an 'outside world' as surely by default there has to be something out there to import?

Its a good point but you can look at it a couple of ways. Gladstone could be on the same land mass but many many miles away. As are perhaps other cities. The import/export could be just to them. It just seems weird that there is nothing about other countries.

Even in out news we have more wider news stories. Say G8 for example or Olympics nominations.

I may be worng - it may just be a practical consideration for the PM's but who knows.
