Knot 17 is the Constrictor Hitch.

I found it on this site http://www.realknots.com/knots/hitches.htm#buntline

I'll keep looking on this site and see if I can define anymore of them.

Edit: a big knot clearing house on the web:

http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/knotlink.htm#knot%20tying

Edit: deleted my list to consolidate up to Sky's

Edit:

[Spec] the mathematical knots in obsession.jpg are labeled with some numbers that may have something to do with this puzzle. Then again, maybe it's just foreshadowing.

Maybe we should classify the knots into the knot theory type they are see:
http://www.math.unl.edu/~mbritten/ldt/table9.gif
and this is the image file that was used for the background off the obsession2.jpg

#36 is a Halyard Bend
#11 is a Jansik Special Found here http://shrimpin.com/knots.htm
#19 is a turtle knot http://www.flyfishingconnection.com/doubleturtle.html
#78 is a Tiller's Hitch

I need to correct #78 which I contributed...It is a Tiller's Hitch, not a Fisherman's Bend. Crying or Very sad I misread the chart.
http://www.uberpest.com/knots.jpg

And this is the pic for #71 http://www.apparent-wind.com/knots/anchor-hitch/ab17.gif because Kythen wasn't sure about it. You got it right Smile

hi,

newbie comment, take it as it is but...

seems to me that the bigger number (seven or eight) close to each visible knot represents the number of times the two ropes in the knot are crossing eachother.

donnow if this means anything.

ciao

No attachment will work with that directory structure. I'll host it at www.smirkbox.com/shazam/knotty.html until the puzzle is solved.

Hmm, annoyingly I'm a scout (well, ex-scout i guess), but no fisherman, so most of the ones that are left are well over my head... I'll keep at it though...

I think knot 23 is a triple surgeons knot, that is according to this link anyways.

Talked to a sailor/fisherman friend of mine at work, he identified

#5 as a Bimminey Knot

and

#35 and #44 as a fisherman's knot -- although that's different fisherman's than the one we identified last night.
